Hello: I have a 48 that has a leaky front loader hydraulic pump. I am wondering if rebuilding this is a job I can do (I"d say I have reasonably good mechanical skills) on my workbench, or is it something that requires special tools and should be left to a professional?

Any comments most appreciated.

Thanks, Charlie

Vickers vane pump, or gear pump of some type?

Neither is hard to rebuild, if you keep things clean, and are carefull.

The Vickers vane pump has better bearings than some gear pumps. I mention this because replacing the seal in some gear pumps with worn bushings may not stop the leak for long, if the pump uses bushings, and the shaft and bushings are woen.

I want to say that rebuild kits are only available for one style of pump,so if you have the other, your out of luck and your options would be another used one or convert to the newer style pump..Ask this over on the ford board for more specifics,I"ve personally never messed with the pumps..Experts over there will fix ya up..
