OT - High mileage on F350 Powerstroke, a problem?

I am looking to buy a 1997 F350 dually with 7.3 Powerstroke diesel. It has 300,000 miles, was used to deliver trailers for a manufacturer so are 95% highway miles. Runs very well, new transmission (auto) last year.

I have a 1989 F350 with 460 gas and 150k+ and no problems, and had a friend with a 1989 F350 diesel that went 400k (he delivered trailers too) before an overhaul.

I just want to use this around the farm to haul tractors on my gooseneck (here"s my tractor part for the YT site), haul the wife"s horses, and transfer cows between pastures. No long-distance moves, etc... maybe 10k miles per year.

Am I stupid for even considering a high-miles unit like this? Everything seems nice and tight and runs great.

I have never owned a Powerstroke before, anything to watch out for on a 1997?

I have a 97 and would not trade for anything, I put alot of pulling miles on it and have had very few repairs. Has the previous owner done any upgrades?(exhaust, powerchip, gauges etc.) I would buy it if the price was right with no fears at all. A good ford diesel website/ forum is The dieselstop.com.....Hope this hepls Jim

If nothing is wrong with your truck I probably wouldn't do it. Remember the maintance on that truck is going to run way more than your gasser, it takes like twice as much oil and has more filters and diesel fuel will grow algae if left alone. 10k miles a year is nothing and the diesel engine will suffer for being run that little.
Your truck should have another 50,000 miles in it yet I would think before needing any serious work, so you're talking about 5 more years...
Then do an overhaul and go 10 more years providing the rust doesn't get it.

My big problem is the A/C on my truck is dead, and both power windows are now broken (go down, but not up). And the rust has eaten her away pretty bad. These factors considered, my wife TOLD ME to get a new truck because it is too hot in the summer and she won't ride in it, especially with the kids. :-)

The motor and tranny will go forever in this thing so mechanically it is great, but it looks like heck, gets 6 mpg, oh...and the radio is broken.

A local guy here has a similar truck, uses it for delivering trailers. I don't know how many miles are on it by now, but basically no problems with the engine. The auto transmission is another story, I think he has lost count of the number of repairs and rebuilts installed over the years.

If you can get it real cheap (and you should)may as well go for it as buying vechicles is a crap shoot anyway. Some new ones don't even make it until the 3 yr 36,000 and die.

when you refer to new ones i hope you mean the 6.0L's. yes they are proving to be crap. we've seen more 6.0L's come through the shop in the short year and a half that they've been out than all the 7.3L's combined. just another ford dealer here out on the plains.
