Hi Im looking at buying a forklift for around the farm. Not really for a heavy lifter just antique plows and seed. Anyone own one or have experience with a 3pt forklift? Pros and cons? Im looking at one that was originally on a forklift that they converted to 3pt. It had a 5000# capacity. He says it goes up 20 feet or so. Rigged up to work on hyd outlet good. Wants $800 sound good? Would put a cyl in toplink spot so i could angle it down and such. What do you all think? Im worried about ballast on front of tractor. Have a 4020 diesel widefront with front weights that would be on most of the time. Also have 4430 widefront with full suitcase weights we could lift seed bags with. We lift 50 bushel bags of beans into hopper wagons. About 2500# I believe. Will it work? Thanks for any thoughts/experience.
Matt

Price sounds good. Sounds like you have the right idea about things.

I would offer some suggestions from my experiences with a similiar unit. I put a two spool valve with a joy stick on the fork lift. One direction for the lift and the other for the tilt. Works real nice to be looking at the work while working the handle.

2500 # jumbo containers into wagons is NOT small lifting. I do it with my set up on a JD 3020 but with a great deal of caution. Hopefully the mast you are looking at has wheels at the base. If not you will probably be limited to the bigger tractor during planting season. My mast weighs about 1250 empty and when you put more than 18 bags of seed the 3 point won't lift so have to run on the wheels of the mast.

We have a FEL on the 3020 and when handling beans I usually scoop up a bucket full of gravel for counterweight.

You will find that you will always want this unit on something so it is always available. Will also find yourself putting lots of things on the farm on pallets that you used to handle by hand. These units are real back savers.

I think it will work, may have a problem keeping the front end down on both tractors, but enough front weight should cure that problem. I would be very cautious about lifting anything the full 20 feet, could get a bit top heavy. I am thinking that some of the three point mounted implements you use might be getting close to what those beans weigh? Maybe even more?
