troubleshooting wisconsin 1 cyl ignition

My neighbor just got an old log splitter with a big 1 cyl wisconsin rope start engine. It is getting no spark.

We opened up the points compartment, made sure the shutoff switch was not on, cleaned the connection to the magneto, cleaned the points with fine sandpaper. And the points are in fact opening and closing. The point gap is about a matchbook cover thickness.

We took out the plug, and as we turn it over, I see no spark, but if I touch the elctrode I can feel a small pulse.

My guess is maybe a bad condensor (although I have NEVER encountered a bad one- I've always heard it is good to replace them). Is there a possibility that the magneto is bad, or the magnet is weak?

Any ideas?

You mention never finding a bad condensor - well I rarely find a good one in older engines. They are usually dead and sometimes shorted. As the other guy mentioned, the spring-loaded impulse needs to be working to get good spark at slow cranking speed - like when pulling with a rope. Magnets get weak but rarely go dead enough to be totally non-functional when in the magneto. Magnets go dead pretty quick if left out without any metal against them. That's why, when in a box, they usually have a metal "keeper" stuck to them. They are easily charged , anyway. I suggest you take an ohmmeter and do some quick checking. Check the continuity through the points, check the condensor against ground (for a short) and also check for capacitance, and then check coil. Check the primary winding (low resistance) and secondary (high resistance). I'll assume you're working on a heavy duty long-stroke engine and not a garden tractor short-stroke engine. Long-stroke engines e.g. AK, AH, BK, BH, HB, HK, etc. have external self-contained magnetos (or optional battery distributors) whereas the garden tractor short stroke engines do not (e.g. S-7, S-8, TR-10, S-10, TRA-12, etc.). Long-stroke engines with mags. , Wico or Edison have a point setting of .015". Fairbanks-Morse and Eisemann are set at .020". The very old engines used Eisemann and Edison mags.

Is it possible to remagnetize a magneto magnet without taking the mag apart?

Yes, but this usually magnetizes the impulse dogs and they hang-up. They usually loose the residual magnetism after a while - but it can be a problem.

Are you hearing a good snap from the magneto impulse when you turn the engine over?? If not, maybe the impulse mechanism needs cleaning and lubricating

This is the more modern type of magneto with a magnet in the flywheel that passes by a fixed coil. Like a lawn mower.

I wonder if there is anything that can go wrong with these? There are no moving parts...

You mentioned cleaning the points with sandpaper. I know we've all done it but it is not recommended. Sandpaper grit may be hampering a proper contact between the points. Clean them up with a point file to be sure.

Yeah, the same things that go wrong with a self-contained magnetos - except the flywheel magneto system does not have an impulse coupling.
