Hi Guys,

Got this idea rollin' around in my head for building an open field chisel. Would a 16' 5x7 1/4" toolbar be stout enough to pull 9 chisel shanks?

Do/did they make such a shank/mount for this type of toolbar?

Thanks,

Allan

what kind of ole boys do you have at the FSA office,,if we tried that on bean ground they would have a crap stroke, one county is pretty good and the one to the north are butt-holes,,they learn there farmming from a book,,,anyway those old NH-3 rigs I think would fit your job,,Ive seen old rigs go for 10 to 75 bucks on sales,,

Bingo!

Ya know, that isn't a bad idea at all! Just have to swap the knives for some bull-tongues. Thanks.

Allann There is No doubt you new girl will pull 9 shanks , just a Screaming and a Flying!. I am not sure about your termonoligy of "open field chiesel"
A standard chiesel plow like the 3pt-13 shank Graham-Hoame I have is 3 - 4x4 cross beams with shanks in a 4-4-5 configuration.
A single 5x7 tool bar is a he!! of a tool bar.
If you are planning on only one foot apart it would probablly be all right though I would crenge in hard packed ground. If you are planning on useing it as a a 9 row ripper on the middles on cirles, I am afraid you don't have enough tool bar to do that! We had a 7 row Orthman middle ripper, It had a 10x10, or 8x8 tool bar I don't remember now. pulling it with a 4840 w/ straddle row duals. 14 to 16 in deep was all we could get out of it and keep any kind of speed. At that point you could watch the tool bar rainbow back in hard pulls. You could forget about running it without the duals.
I am sure Hamby or Orthman, or someone makes a mount that will put that shank on a 5x7! Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Allan, Now!.. I understand what you want. May I suggest look around and find an old Drag-type Graham-Hoame chiesel plow, Add a set of beaver tails and there you go.... one "Sand-Fighter" ready to go. I got my 13 drag type for $50 bucks, put on 2 tires, and 13 new sweeps and I have all if $200 in it counting purchase price.
Now back to your Q about that 5x7. There is no reason why you couldn't 13, 15 or 17 shanks wide in a Sand-Fighter application. I have been there-none-that on dryland places. I remember we fought sand all one winter in 81 on a dryland 320, every 2 weeks It would start back to blowing, was never so glad to see early spring rains than that year.

John A.

You can get 5x7" bars in several different thicknesses.I would use at the least 1/4".You will probably also want to use high carbon steel. And use 7018 rod if you arc weld it or the weld will likely crack.
