Sort of like a very large upside down frisbee. The blades attach near the outer edge of the disc. The edges of the disc turn upward so it will tend to ride up and over anything solid to prevent bending the shaft. I think most all modern cutters have them now.

The ones I have seen where just a big disc that went out as far as the bolts that hold on the blades. The idea was that it would jump over a stump but most of the one I saw where on broken brush cutters because a lot of time the stump jumper would brake the shaft instead of jumping over the stump

Or in the case of the 8' Mohawk I had, I high centered it on a terrace and took out the center gear box (drove 2 side boxes). Course It couldn't have been because I had a 90 hp tractor and the moron that designed the thing put a 45 hp gearbox in the center to drive 2 ea 4' blades.
