Adding a pyrometer

I have a IH 826 with an M&W turbo kit. It looks like somone removed the pyrometer guage. They screwed a 3/8 pipe plug into the manifold where the sender would go. I was looking at a JD 8650 today that had a pyro added. It looks like it is nothing more than a sending unit screwed into the manifold with two wires running up to the guage. Is there anything more to that to installing them? Does anyone know where I could buy such a pyro? No need to give me any websites selling them, want to see it in person before I buy.

Your local heavy truck parts supplier will have them, probably in stock. There's not much to them. Just the probe that goes in the pipe, and a gauge that goes on the dash. You supply the wire between. There is no electrical source involved, as the sender generates it's own signal. AS noted below, locating the probe in the pipe after the turbo will yeild about a 200 F reduction in temperature. The manifold is the place, if you have a single inlet turbo. If you have a twin inlet, you're only going to get the temp from half the cylinders. I installed one on my 7710, and went in the pipe downstream from the turbo for that reason. It's amazing how fast they build heat. It's a useful tool. Good luck.

If its a thermocouple pyrometer, you might need to use thermocouple extension wire instead of copper to keep the readings accurate.

Another source is Aircraft Spruce since exhaust pyrometers are common in aircraft.

Snowmobile parts supply shops have pyro meters of several types for reasonable prices.

Not big deal to install a pyro. The sending unit generates low voltage that drives the indicator. Amazing how fast EGTs will change when you really put a load on one, especially if you are at any altitude and have the fuel turned up.
A few sites out there that sell them.
Installation prior to the turbo yeilds about 200 deg hotter than after the turbo.

Isspro is one source.

Even tough you requested no websites, I'll post one link. Maybe one of the resellers is near you.
