Can somebody please explain to this shade tree mechanic exactly what a govenor does on a tractor?(am I even spelling it right). All my life all I thought a govenor on a motor did was keep it from over revving. As I study the one in my manual for my Oliver 1550 it looks a lot more complicated than just for that purpose.

Thanks Stan

There are many types of governors. There are simple RPM limiters; Chevy trucks with gas engines used to have one that limited the engine to 4000 rpm.

Most farm and construction equipment have a "variable speed" governor. These do not try to hold the engine speed to a set rpm; rather they allow the engine to slow down a little under load.

Stationary engines, such as generator sets, are likely to have a "constant speed" governor. These try to hold the engine speed to a very precise rpm, regardless of the load.

Another interesting type of governor is the one used on propellor-driven aircraft. They have what is called a "constant speed" prop, and there's a separate control for the propellor speed. The pilot uses the throttle to adjust power (manifold pressure on a piston engine) and the propellor control to adjust rpm. The governor automatically adjusts the propellor pitch to maintain the selected rpm.

I think that there are at least two different types. One will regulate your RPM for varying loads and the other will limit just your top end RPM. Some school buses and military vechicles have these.

It governs the RPM's of an engine. If it senses the RPM's slow down below the speed set by the lever, it will open the carb butterfly plate to increase RPM's. If it senses the engine RPM's go above the speed set by the lever, it closes the carb butterfly plate to slow the engine down.

Not only does it keep it from over revving it opens up on a hard pull to let more fuel in to keep it from lugging down.

Another way of looking at it is a constant speed device.

You set the speed with the throttle (overreving function) and it gives all it has when needed (anti lugging down function) and backs off the fuel when not needed.

You'd wear out the throttle lever in a hurry without it.

Like "cruise control" on a hiway vehicle controls ground speed,it adjusts throttle position to maintain a constant engine/PTO speed thru varying work conditions.

Sounds reasonable.
