Hello,

Do any of you have an idea on how to replace a main bearing (principal axle) on a ford 4000.

This bearing is leaking badly when the tractor is hot.

Please help.

Much depends upon which 4000 you have. If you have a 4 cylinder from '62-64, then you should be able to follow MSM's advice. If you have a post '65, then the game is different. Then you must remove the axle trumpett, pull the brakes, then the planetary, and then remove the retainer bolt on the outer shaft, and then extract the shaft. Once you do that, then you can remove the seal and bearing if necessary. A leaking seal is not all that uncommon. That's the basics of it. HTH.

I'm going on the assumption you have an axle seal leaking on the rear? First thing to check is if the rear is overfull.Water has a tendency to get in the rear housings if the tractor sits out.If this isn't the case, jack the tractor up securely, remove tire and wheel, remove brake drum, there are 5 or 6 bolts holding the axle to the housing. Remove these, pull the axle out, seal should be in the end of the axle housing or behind the bearing if I remember correctly. If it is behind the bearing, the bearing will have to be pressed off the axle, new seal installed and bearing pressed back on. Reassemble in reverse order.
