I gots one to run by you.

'99 Z-71 extended cab, stepside, V8, auto, leather, loaded, 240,000 well maintained hwy miles. Bossman bought it new. Might have been in 4wd a dozen times. Never worked a day in it's life.

Trucks in good shape. No dents - a few scratches.

I may get the chance to buy it cheap. If I can get it cheap enough, I'm willing to replace the engine and transmission in the near future.

I believe it's a good truck. Just HIGH milage.

If my current HIGH (201,000) milage truck was an extended cab 4wd, I'd replace the engine and tranny when needed and keep on driving it. And I suspect that's fixin to happen.

Gonna use this truck for everything. 80 miles a day. Riding 'round the fahm on the weekends. Picking up the kids at school (that's why I want the extended cab).

Any thoughts?
Mitch

We have a 94 Chevy Blazer - full size jobber. 235,000 miles and still doesn't use oil. But, the trans just went - $1500. I wouldn't have put a new trans in, but everything else is great - almost no rust - in Michigan thats rare. GM makes these bodies out of a galvanized steel. Unless the galvan coat is breeched, it won't rust. Easy.

I agree with jhill. Keep the old truck and try to pick up a VW Jetta or golf in diesel. They get excellent fuel economy and like the engergiser bunny they just keep going and going and going. My 97 jetta has cost nearly nothing in repairs other than tires and brakes and eshaust. We also had to replace the glow plugs once 300 k on it now

 I guess my real question is . . . . in reply to Leo B, 04-16-2005 05:09:21
That's a good plan - and may be where I'm headed.

First I need a good middle of the road / do everything vehical. That's where this Z-71 fits in - 4wd (no more running starts to get though those soft spots), seats 5 (I can help pick up the kids safley), better on gas than my 2wd (not much, but every little bit helps), and it's in my price range (cheap). The truck I'm driving now is in about the same or worse condition.

Right now I can't aford to operate two vehicals. I will in a couple years. Then - I may go VW hunting for the commute - and C65 hunting for the hauling.

I guess my real question is - should I stay away from a chevy with 240,000 miles?

Mitch

With the price of gas today I'd keep your old one and but something that gets better gas mileage.

I tried to sell my 99 super duty Ford 100K miles for $7000 and no takers. So I put it back to work. I'll drive another 100k and then give it away. Used pickups just ain't worth much.

Mitch, Just picked up a truck for my 84 yr old mom for her farm truck... a 95 Chevy, 4x4,X-cab, silverado, Short wide.(just not a Z-71) Normal wear and trear for a truck @ 210K mileage. No dents, new tires, only holes inthe bed are from an old style 5th wheel RV hitch. Straight as a pin. very nice well cared for truck. It runs like a scalded dog. Got it wholesale out of Deep South Texas gave $4000 for it. That is a more reasonable ballpark to start from.
Later,
John A.

Are you asking what it is worth. My thoughts....I would offer him a fair price. Go to KBB.com (that is the kelly blue book value) I would guess $2000 or so. That is a lot of miles even if it is in good shape. My neighbor traded in his 1994 4wd chevy ex. cab to a dealer and he got $8,000 for it I think it had 90,000 miles on it or so, he put that down on a 2002 Diesel chevy, which cost $27,000 or so.

KBB says $10,100 on private party transaction. Spend $2000 more and get a Dodge with a Cummins diesel. You won't have to replace the engine and trans, and you can actually do something off road and get back on the road unassisted.

I've already ran it through KBB.com and I'm surprized at how those trucks hold there value. No wonder they're so popular with folks who trade often.

I'm thinking I can buy it for less than market value because he kinda wants me to have it.

Hey Mitch, I'd buy that truck. Deb's uncle in Southhaven, Ms. has a hot shot delivery business. He buys a new Chevrolet PU about every 3 years or 300,000 miles. Never had engine or transmission problems. That thing might go 500,000 miles or more. I think age and short trips hurt them more than miles. That's my opinion and you got it for a bargain. Howdy Steve!

You're prolly right about those highway miles. And this truck has spent most of it's life running up and down the road on 25+ mile trips. I know it's been serviced well also.

25 miles isn't a trip. That's a run into 7-11 for a Coke and a hotdog.
