Jump starting a 1947 Ford 8N

Is there anyway to jump start it?? I know it has the 6 volt positive ground system...how do you jump it if you can?????

Steve(OR) has it right. Ignore everyone else. Just to reiterate the most important part:

MAKE SURE THE TRACTOR IS IN NEUTRAL!!!

Check it three times. While you're performing this procedure you will be likely crouched down in the path of the left rear tire. If it's in gear that tire could wind up on your chest.

Connecting a 12V battery directly to a 6V battery is a recipe for fried coil, points, exploded battery, etc.

Steve's method isolates the 12V source from the sensitive 6V components. The only thing the 12V source battery is doing is providing cranking power. This method assumes there's enough juice in the 6V battery of your 8N to fire the plugs.

It is obvious that these guys don"t really know how to jump start a 6 volt 8N from 12 volts. The starter turns the same direction regardless of polarity. You do need some charge in your six volt battery to get the ignition system to get sparkies at the plugs. Polarity don"t matter if you do the following.

MAKE SURE TRACTOR IS OUT OF GEAR (you are bypassing the starter switch safety interlock and could get run over otherwise). Connect jumper cables to the good 12V battery. Connect either cable to the big post on the starter (Starters turn the same way regardless of how they are hooked up). Turn the ingition key to on. Touch the remaining cable to a good ground away from the battery. Tractor should start, then disconnect all cables.

I stand by my advice to keep the polarity correct, just in case someone mashes down the starter switch while it's being jumped by 12 Volts.

There is NOTHING to loose, and the podsibility of something to gain by keeping the battery polarity matched while jump-starting the (+) ground tractor.

Of course, you may live in a world where Murphy's Law does not apply!

Umm you need to get the polarity correct. IE hook the cable that is the Neg (ground) on the PU to the Neg (hot) lead on the 8N. Otherwise the 6 on the tractor will be fighting the booster vehicle instead of helping. I know the starter doesn't care but the rest of the system does.

Would also suggest that you make the ground hook on the tractor last and unhook it IMMEDIATLY when engine catches. Make this connection to the frame somewhere away from the battery. Don't stand with your face over the battery. If the battery blows up you will get hit with a ugly stick and spend some time in the hospital.

As mentioned before make sure tractor is in neutral.

you can use your 12 volt neg ground pickup to jump your 6 volt pos ground tractor. hook pos cable to pos on pickup and neg to neg on pickup then pos to starter where the cable hooks to it. and then make sure it is in NEUTRAL and hook neg to a ground somewhere near the starter. the 12 volts will not hurt as long as you dont do it for very long. and your starter doesnt care if it neg or pos.

Why not hook the cables up positive ground at the tractor just as the tractor's 6 Volt battery is? If someone did happen to hit the starter switch on the tractor, the 6 Volt to 12 Volt mis-match wouldn't be as bad as a (+) to (-) ground mis-match PLUS the 6 Volt to 12 Volt mis-match!

I realize the original "N" starter doesn't care about the polarity, but what do you see as the advantage in reversing the ground polarity of the boost system, as opposed the tha tractor's ground polarity???

yep same thing. again make sure it is in NEUTRAL. many accidents could have been avoided by doing this simple thing.
