Hi all, I've decided my next tractor will be either an IH 656 diesel or Oliver 1650 or 1655 diesel. I've heard good things about both makes and models. Would be used for haying (square bales), corn, soybeans, oats, and general farm use. Please no color wars, just would like some other peoples opinions. TIA Rich

Just like my Grandpa and Uncles always said, if you wanted the best and hardest working tractor, buy an Oliver. My almost 40 yr old 1850 gasser still surprises the big guys with what it"ll pull with a set a duals!! You"ll like the more gears and steering for what you"re doing.

Hi Rich,

I have a 1650 diesel and a friend of mine has a 656 diesel with a loader on it and they're both great tractors.

They've all got their pros/cons, the 1650/1655(basically same tractor) will out pull the 656 all the time, is better starting, easy to work on, and has more gears than the 656. The 656 has nicer power steering, better brakes,(nice colour too, though the fact that he recently painted it could have something to do with it :>D ). If your using it alot for baling and pulling I would opt for a 1650, you got more gears and the over/under/direct is nice for baling.
The 1650 also has an almost indestructible PTO - great for baing AND easy to fix...

I like the 3pt on the 656 better though, actually I think the entire hydraulic system is better on the 656. If you were going in for precision grading/snowplowing/loading or more utiity jobs I would pick the 656.

Given what you say your going to be using it for though, I would opt for the 1650/1655 as long as it has over/under shift on it.

How many acres are you running? A 656 or a 1650 is not a huge amount of tractor to be a main one... God bless, and let me know what you get in the end :)

Pawel

Right now, I'm only baling 5 acres w/ a Farmall H. Looking a couple years down the road, next summer, might be able to rent 40 acres. Have to wait and see.

I have a 1650 gas Oliver and had a 666 IH for a while back in the eighties. Both good tractors. I think I felt a little better at the end of the day after driving the Oliver. Just like the Oliver seat better. Never did like where IH put the throttle. Up behind the steering wheel isn't real handy. Just as a side note, I think an M Farmall is one of the most comfortable tractors to drive that ever was made. Jim.

Rich: You got a toss up, I have operated both these tractors. Looked very hard at both back when they were new. I chose the 656 because of dealer support and parts availability. That may be quite different in Iowa than where I lived. It also may be quite different today than almost 40 years ago. That is the one I'd be checking out.

Definitly the Oliver. I have 3 1650/55 & had a 656 gas. The IH just drank the gas & didn"t get a lot done. I have 1 gas & 2 diesel olivers & they would get more done than the 656 could on the same amount of gas plus they had more gears to choose from.

I have had both of these tractors. The 656 is a real good tractor realy liked it.Still have my late model 1650.For what you want to use it for I would take the 1650 more gears tighter turning radius, tilt wheel, swingaway pedals. You didn't say gas or diesel mine where diesels the IH was better on fuel.656 I had was a glow plug start and the Oliver is direct start.Nearest dealer might make a difference on decission.
