I just wondered what you folks would recommend as a good working /collectable tractor. I have a Case 695 for bigger work and a JD 4200 for smaller stuff both have loaders. I am thinking of buying a more interesting antique tractor to do some work but also to tinker with and restore. So I guess aroud a 35 to 50 horse tractor would be in order. I would like a diesel and I want it running and with most of the pieces. If anybody has one in Michigan let me know. I would like something interesting but with parts available. Please let me know what your ideas would be. I am looking :) Thanks for reading this.

I think the only tractor that could fit that description wiuld be a Massey 65 or slightly newer, 65 up Massey 165 or Ford 4000, JD 2020, still 40 year old but not considered an antique, to be antique they are considered 39 and older with 40 to 55 called classic with above that called modern

Hey guys thanks for the tips. I apologize that I don't know more about these things. It does look like I may be looking for a classic rather than antique. Thank you for the recommendations and thoughts. I will be searching with these models in mind. Phil

I think what you are looking for might be a Fordson Major Diesel. They are about as old as you can get and still have good restoration sources. Maybe a John Deere 435. You also might like a 3 cyl Ford or Massey Ferguson. You might find a Minneapolis Jet Star 3 diesel. An Allis 160 is a nice tractor, but not all that plentiful. I'm not sure whether these are old enough to be "antique".
Generally, the old diesels are pretty big and clunky and also scarce. The John Deere R was the first popular diesel tractor in the Midwest.
