Thought this might be further proof (if you need any) that if a deal sounds too good to be true, it is. Period.

A friend of mine was bidding on a snowmobile on ebay. He was outbid, and auction ended. Several days later someone posing as the seller emailed him, advising him that the winning bidder could not come up with the cash, and the guy would be willing to sell the sled to my friend for his high bid. Of course, the seller also mentioned that he had a problem with his email, and would have to conduct remainder of the transaction via phone//off ebay. SO they talked, arranged the deal....fake seller says "what the hay...if you send me a cashier"s check for the full amount right away, I will ship it to you for free (I think it was in Michigan somewhere) since my brother in law owns a trucking company" My friend gets a loan from his wife"s parents and sends the cashier"s check.
The check cleared.....but sled never showed up and they could no longer contact the "seller".
They attempted to contact the seller via ebay, and got in touch with the REAL seller who said..."I sold that sled a couple of weeks ago to the high bidder on ebay...it is long gone."

I was aware of this kind of scam, and would never even dream of sending a $2500 cashier"s check to someone I never met. I wish my friend would have asked for my (or someone else"s) opinion before going through with this. Greed gets the best of us, I suppose. The deal was too good to pass up, right?

Don"t let it happen to you or anyone you know.

I was scammed once for $500. I have a new way of finding out if the person is legit. I go to the www.whitepages.com. If it doesn"t give me the person"s address, telephone number, birthdate, etc., I don"t do business with them. If your friend takes this information, he might just find out who the guy is. Another thing I do not like is websites giving the spammers e-mail addresses before they go to the white pages. Maybe they should make this a law!!!! It sure would stop alot of scamming on websites.

I make it a point never to bid more on eBay than I can afford to lose. Consider it a form of gambling.

If your friend had followed this rule, he would never have bid in the first place, let alone get scammed by a third party.

So, does your friend have any idea the address where he sent the money? Or the name of the man he wrote it to? or the phone number where he called to contact? And one of these would put the scammer in the big house for a long time.

I don"t know the details about what information he has....but I know that they did file a police report in whatever town it was in....I doubt they will have any luck but you never know.

I agree that if you can"t afford something (that you don"t need desperately) that costs $2500, you have no business buying it.

It"s still a bummer for the guy cause he is now out $2500 to his in-laws with nothing to show for it.

I"ll tell him to look at it as payment for the privalege of marrying their daughter...or for all the free babysitting...or whatever. I am sure that will make him feel better....

No offense in my comments, but in my opinion your friend has first a money handling problem and then second, a problem with the scam artist. Anyone who has to borrow $2500 from his wife's parents to buy a snowmobile hasn't got his financial priorities straightened out yet. I'm not suprised that he got taken.

its funny how we sometimes will trust people on the internet we dont know but wouldnt in person. i was scammed on ebay once by a guy named stihltech but i sent him a money order ... i allways like to use my credit card to pay for ebay stuff, wont send a money order again,, creditcard co. can do a chargeback if you get the shaft.... also remember, dont pay for car or home repairs in advance either. if a company doesnt have the doe to buy the parts for a job then get someone else. home repairs paid for in advance are impossible to recover ,even if you go to court ... lucas

lucas.... as a contractor i will not start a job without money down to buy materials. your afraid the contractor wont show... well im afraid i wont get paid when im done. thats why i ask for money down. you say even going to court wont get you the money back in the end.... i say putting a lean on the house wont get me anywhere after the job is done either. liens good for 10 years and as long as you dont sell the house, a lien dont mean nothing. i just thought i would try and defend myself and fellow contractors that just because we ask for money down doesnt mean any sort of scam is involved. sorry if i have offended you and not trying to take a direct shot at you, just want to tell the other side

I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong about contracting a job. I will say how I handle this situation. Once a price is agreed on for the job, the money can be deposited in an escrow account, for the contractor when the job is completed. Usually a contractor either has the money to buy the material or has good enough credit to secure the material. When the job is finished, the money can be released to the builder.
Or, the property owner can buy the material for the job, and the contracting expenses can be deposited in an escrow account to be released upon completion of the job. A simple way to keep both parties honest.

hi chad, i didnt take offense to your post, i guess it all comes down to knowing who your dealing with.its just that ive seen so many people give contractors money and they never come back.didnt mean to imply you were like that,or all contractors are like that, and i know contractors get the shaft also.after a go around with one guy, i decided not to pay anything up front anymore unless maybe the materials have been delivered. best regards, lucas

It does work both ways doesn"t it? Ultimately, in the end, it all has to come down to trust, no matter how many contracts have been signed.
