I have a john deere 60 that has a power trol that doesnt work. the pump makes a whining noise when you pull back on the lever as if its trying to do something but nothing moves. It has the aux. outlets on the back and someone told me I have to hook a hydraulic hose to them to cirulate the fluid but that dont work. If anyone has any ideas let me know.

If you're trying to operate the rockshaft with no weight, it will do nothing as the rockshaft has no down pressure. In order to make the square shafts turn, you will either need to hook it to the item you wish to use to provide the wieght necessary or hook a pipe wrench to the square shaft and pull clockwise down on them while running the lever. The square shafts should turn with a little weight on them.

If you're hooking a cylinder to a set of pioneer tips on a 90 degree pipe fitting out the side of the powertrol unit, it will also not have down pressure - or so I've been told. This is not a factory setup. Someone removed the plugs and stuck these on.

If you're taking out the dummy plugs and putting a set of powertrol fittings into the holes, the cylinder should have up and down pressure. The powertrol tips look like the dummy plugs but instead have female threads to put them on hoses to connect to the hydraulic cylinder.

the rockshaft has a 3 pt hitch on it. would that be enough weight to operate it. I dont have anything hooked up to the hydraulic couplers.

I don't know. I would think it has enough weight with the 3 pt hitch. Like greywolf said, you need to have the dummy plugs in the back of the powertrol unit to operate the rockshaft.

I also don't know whether or not having those pioneer fittings out the side would affect it. I've never actually been around a tractor with that sort of modification - just seen pictures of other tractors. If you're looking to restore this tractor, you'll hafta remove them sometime anyhow.

Hopefully, someone more helpful than I will respond to your post on johnnypopper.

It's been ages since using the rockshaft. But we had 2 sets of plugs.

Aren't the "solid" plugs (the ones without the hole in the interior nipple) needed for rockshaft operation?

I seem to remember a certain set of plugs needed when the cultivators went on the 60 and 70.

There are seevral posting about setting the Power-Trol on two cylinders for remote cylinder usage, rockshaft or a bit of both. Over on the JD section rather than this generic tractor area. A Baker valve is the best way to operate both. Which style of plugs are in the back? Does the top plug have a rotary adjustment which switches from rockshaft to remotes? Are the remotes straight out the back or from the right side of the Power-Trol. Is the hydraulic relief valve opening at too low of a pressure? Is there oil flow from the Power-Trol to the pump and back to the Power-Trol when the pump is turning?
