Hi Guys,

I've got an old tractor and the tach lens seems to be a plexiglass of somekind, instead of just plain glass. It has a "dull" appearance to it, whcih from a distance, almost has a "yellowish" appearance.

If I rub it lens with moisture, it seems clear but then it will dull again when it dries.

Have you guys got any tricks up your colective sleeves to clean this old gizmo up so I can easily read this tach?

Thanks,

Allan

Allan, Tooth paste! ! ! Will take care of that in short order. My was so dingy, it was unreadable! I took so tooth paste to it and a soft coth and a little water to moisten and it cleared right up.
Later,
John A.

And another thing that will work is automotive rubbing compound, I have polished my watch crystals with it and they come out looking new. Do it by hand, useing a chunk of one of your old tee shirts and your pointy finger.

get a catalog from the eastwood company they have some stuff in there that will take care of it, people use it on the plastic headlights on cars to get rid of the yellow appearance, seams to work good..www.eastwoodco.com they sell stuff for auto restoration

Hi Allan, Brasso will work if the haze is on the outside. Brasso is a liquid metal polish. It"s red. Probably just red rouge dissolved in some kind of liquid.Put some on a rag and rub hard. May take a while unless you have a little buffing wheel you could put in a drillmotor. Brasso is just a brand name. Any kind of buffing compound will probably work. I hope this helps. Steve Norwood, Texarkana p.s. corn around here is about 6 inches tall. Sure wish I was farming.

Allan, why don"t you pop the bezel off and replace the plastic lens with glass? It"s not as hard as it looks.

Casey, you cut the lens your self, {Window pane} I didn't see the knob in the center of the lens when I posted, but a diamond drill bit shouldn't be more than 15 dollars. I haven't bought a glass cutter in a while, but I would say 4-5 bucks at your local hardware.

Darned if I can remember,

Did they come that way new? Mine has the little "speed changing" knob in the middle.

I cleaned it off enough to read the hours this morning. Wanted to see how many hours they put on the new engine. Now reads 4520 as opposed to 4509 when they tore 'er down.

Maybe they took it to the dance, I dunno. Anyway, see how "faded looking" the silly thing is?

I doubt they did anything to it, normally they let it run a little while after rebuilding it to make sure the rings seat and its not smoking and to make sure everything else is working. I doubt they did too much to your girl. :)

One more thing! Don't use any cleaner on it that has amonia in it.. Windex etc. that will slowly chemicaly react and cloud plexi. Soap and water clean only.

I wonder if that is what happened somewhere along the line?

Gotta be something along that idea, 'cause this is an IH tractor. They last forever, ya know. :>)

It is the only thing I can see wrong with the old sister now. Other than the dust on the new paint from settin' in the shop for so darned long. :>)

What helps with crazing on the outside Allen is pledge or any kind of wax pollish. It will help fill the craze and sort of pollish the plexi clear. It is an old airshow pilot trick. I wash my windshield with pledge even when keeping my shiny side up. Cheap fix if it works for you. Good luck!

If you would just get the thing home, get her lined up on the corner post at the other end of the field, take your right hand, place it on the throttle lever, release clutch slowly, pull throttle back till it stops, drive to other end of field. It's not rocket science old buddy. How many M's had tacks on them, and I bet you didn't worry about how fast the engine was running. As long as it is pulling what is behind it, it is running fast enough. Jeesh. :-) Harley

Harley!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! ! Dag-nabit!!!! I don't give a fig about the engine rpm.

You're not paying attention. Go by what I mean, not what I say. :>)

Aw, you know how I am. All three tractors on this go around have to be ABSOLETLY NEW again. EVERYTHING.

Then, I can take 'em out and tear 'em up at my leisure. :>(

You know I'm picky,
