Hello all;
My diabetic Uncle had his left leg removed last week. He is recovering well, and looking forward to haying on his 885 IH. Even though he will soon be fitted with a prosthesis, I'd like to help convert this tractor to a hand clutch.
Any ideas?

Thanks!
John

Got some pics up of the attachments on 2 4020's and a 2440. They have worked well for over 20 years.

Five years ago I broke my ankle and needed to come up with a way to get the spring planting done. My family took care of the dairy chores and I made a hand clutch attachment that fit on the three field tractors- JD 30, 40, and 50 Series, so I could do the field work. Cost about five bucks for each one, and did not interfere with a non-handicapped driver using the tractor. Was published in Farm Show, got contacted by Agribility project- Farm Show editors completely rewrote what I submitted and made several major mistakes- their editors are illiterate when it comes to real farm equipment knowledge, which is why I will not submit any of the other 18 or so ideas I've developed, because they insist on 'rewrite'. Agribility took my clutch handle idea (I actually sent them one of the clutch handles I made), and had to make drawings of 'modifications' before they put it on their website. My handle clamped onto the existing clutch pedal with two bolts, and by it's design, gained leverage and stability by how it attached. If you send your mailing address to Ripcord489@Hotmail.com I'll send you a picture of the handle.

On second thought- give me a day or so and I'll remount one of the other two clutch handles, take a pic and post. Our scanner doesn't work to show an existing pic, but the dig cam still does. I imagine many others could use the same idea- I remounted it six months later when making a silage pile and needed to ride the clutch while unloading, and the ankle was still sore. Don't need a broken or missing foot to utilize the idea.

I think I have the simplest option. My uncle lost his left leg in a PTO accident in the early 80's. Since then he has been farming just fine. Each of their tractors simply has a rod bolted to the back side of the clutch that he can operate with his left arm. It is fastened to the back side so that anyone else can operate the tractor without anything getting in the way. Has worked for twenty years. Let me know if you want to see a pic of how he did it.

I have a TA lever and rod off a 400....looks like I could make it work as a clutch lever.....you could even lock the clutch in .....it would look like it belonged on there..

My grandfather had two hip replacements (both on the left hip) and after the second one wore out the doctor didn"t think another one would help. For the last few years that Gramp farmed (up until he was nearly 80) he used his crutch to work the clutch on our tractors. Made for some interesting times when us boys stacked hay on the wagons, but it kept him farming for several years past when he would have otherwise.

A buddy of mines Dad lost he leg the same way.He was devistated by it and felt his life wasnt worht living anymore.We took his old Super M Farmall and after some fabrication,donated by a local machine shop,and some hydraulic help from a local shop,he now has a hydraulic cylinder where the clutch linkage was.he uses the control rod for the live pump to work the clutch.He doesnt farm anymore but loves showing,and we take him to as many as possible and let him drive that Super M anywhere he wants.hes fiqured out how he can get up on it himself we the prosthesis on and now he his full of life again!

Check out a program, Agriability, through your states Extension Service. It provides help in all sorts of conversions (both plans and financial). One of my best friends was paralyzed from the waist down as a teenager and he farms today (in his 40's). They designed a 4020 with a hydraulically tilting cab and a lift.

Look at some trucks, many have hyd clutch operation. You would have to fabricate a hand lever and brackets, but I have seen it done. John

Look at an electric actuator, just put a push button on the gear shift. You could probably convert an old satalite dish mover, most of them run on 12 volts and are reversable.
