Trailer brakes revisited...

Due to a lack of time for a while, I'm finally getting around to sorting out my trailer brake troubles.

I'm first changing controllers, mainly because I found my fantasy brake controller that is air actuated, rather than surge or hydraulicly actuated.

My question is: Its a Kelsey-Hayes controller, and I have 3 wires, red, blue and black, and no manual or markings to tell me whats what. Other controllers I've looked at have red(stoplight), black(power), white(ground) and blue(brakeline). Does anyone have any solid insight as to what wire would be what? This controller should be wired just like one of the old hydraulic models a lot of us grew up with before ABS dictated new electronic controllers. Unfortunately I only used them, never wired them....

Hi LC,

They wire just like the new ones as the colors didn't change with the controller case as ground.

Doesn't KH have a website that shows the controller?

You must have a air brake source? I'm confused!

I once found it on a RV parts website but can't now. Its model number 100400B.

My tow vehicle has air brakes but my trailer has electric. When I break down and buy another trailer I'll definitely go with air/hydraulic disc.

I finally got sick enough of looking at all the way way overpriced, worn out diesel duallys and just built me a truck. I took a regular semi-tractor and removed one drive axle, chopped off the frame and put a 1 ton pulling bed on it to tow my dual tandem. I got it re-rated and re-registered all the way down under CDL weight. It now uses the same plates and inspection sticker as my pick-up, is cheaper to insure and a heck of a lot more fun to drive. With a small block Detriot S60 and a Super 10 its got more power than I'll ever need and still gets over 8.5 mpg loaded. Even with 700K on it, it will still outlast a brand new dually and probably never turn a wrench on it. Its actually cheaper all the way around except when its time to do oil changes..... .... $183 last week.

Here is what the controller looks like:

Hi LC,

I would still think the BC will wire the same on the trailer side but I'm not a air brake guy so you need to ask someone else.

I know just enough about airbrakes to get myself into trouble :-) Thats why I sent my son to ASE school and ask him the air brake questions...lol
