Lawn roller from 55 gal drums?

I want to make a lawn roller out of two 55 gal drums. Has anyone done this, and will it work? Will the ridges on the drum cause trouble? It will only see little use, fixing frost heave damage, and to roll freshly seeded areas.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Bob

I used a 30 gallon grease drum for behind the cub. The thing weighs over 600# which is plenty heavy for on the yard. yes you do see the ridges but they fade away with the rains and such and they do not tear up the yard much. Using the card board drum would be a good idea too.

My lawn roller was made using a cardboard drum. They have no ridges. We put a pipe through the center of the ends and let it stick out about 6 inches on both ends. When the cement dried in the drum, just needed to peel off the cardboard. I built a toung and attached it the the pipe ends.

the ridges will cut into lawn while you are turning. Try finding an old galvanized hot water tank.

I looked for an old water heater but was unable to find one at this time, I have passed up a million of them in the past, go figure. Any way, if I were to make one out of concrete, what diameter should it be? I want to make it six feet long? and just in case, is there a water heater that would have been that tall?

Thanks for the help!! I don't want to wreck what lawn I have!

Bob
