I was doing a discing job, and could not finish do to the rain. I left my JD 5020 at the field until the ground dried up. I could have moved the tractor to a different location, but I thought it was ok where it was. I checked on it now and then. But the last time I checked on it someone had broken the fender lights off. Why would someone do this? One other time someone poured water from a mud hole down the stack on another tractor, I woundered why it didn't turn over. Stan in calif.

Many years ago (well, not that many) i drove a Studebaker Hawk. I always parked it in our side driveway. (Don't laugh!! I dusted off many Mustangs and Camaros at traffic lights! Ya had to know how to shift the automatic tranny! And a stock 289 engine!) Next door lived 2 young fellers who had cars but no jobs! Their folks ran a local beer joint, and i'd go there in the evenings. Now, this time was when gas was in one of those spells when it was hard to get, and there were long lines to get it! I noticed whenever i bought gas, several days later it was going down faster than ever. and one morning, i found the gas cap laying on the ground, under the fender! The fender had a gas door in it. So, i wired in a large rat trap, set it, and put it on top of the gas cap, and closed the door! didn't take long to find it had been tripped! That evening, I went down to the bar, and one of their boys had large band-aids on his fingers! I asked him what happened--he said his brother had closed the car door on them. BUT!! No more of my gas disappeared! by Rustyj

You're in CA too? Nuff said. I spend a lot of time in the local junkyards due to my disease (old car itis). I've seen kids (Mexican mostly) go through the yards with tire irons breaking windows and headlights as they go. Hey, it's not their property. Why should they care? No use in trying to stop them. They should have been taught more respect at home.

It seems like no matter where you go you hear about this kind of mess happening, and even though we hear so much about it nowdays it's been going on for years. Funny thing the culprit can just as easily be the "honest" guy next door you've known for years as it it can a "drug crazed homless maniac" that just wandered into town. I had an Uncle that years ago was having his gas tank siphoned nearly dry at night. After it happened a few times, enough so the culprit got confident, he drained it and filled it half way with diesel. Next morning he was outside when one of the neighbors went to start his car. Guess who's tank the fuel had gone into... the last person he would have ever have thought of.... Nothing was ever said about what happened but there was never any more gas stolen out of his tank. I know of another outfit out in the boonies that has been having diesel stolen from their portable tank here lately. Now it's full of water with just enough fuel on top to make it look good. Their just waiting to find the guys truck stuck half way back to the gate....There are alot of sorry people in this world and it's never gonna get any better til the government gets off their collective a-- and starts prosecuting true criminals instead of treating the criminals like the victims. Just my .02

That is different tho - the person 'gets' something for their efforts. Knocking lights off a tractor, breaking windows, etc. has no 'value' to the person doing it.

I don't understand such random, senseless acts. Theft - that I at least understand.

A few points on this subject... Hope I do not offend anyone, but if I do, it will not be the first time.... We are faced with a large portion of our population that resents what others have. Rather than work & try to have something themselves, they prefer to tear down what others have, in an attempt to bring them down to a lower level. Ones that do this are usually unemployed, & often have drug /alcohol problems. We have a lot of those types here. Funny thing is, they can all afford to smoke, drink, have cellphones & get tattoos.. All on zero income... They look at anyone that has anything as the "Enemy" & will not hesitate to steal or destroy our property. In their minds, we owe them. I have been told several times that I should be ashamed to own a business, when so many people are homeless..... Gee , not my fault that they are too sorry to work... Probably for the best you did not catch the vandals in action, if you had hurt one of them, I am sure you would be facing a civil suit. The best advice my Dad ever gave me was to never cross anyone with nothing to lose, 'cause you will lose every time....

I think analyzed the problem correctly. I believe it eventually boils down to no work ethic. Since everything is either free or can be stolen, they can't/don't comprehend how much effort went into purchasing that tractor. They just know if they tear it up it pisses you off a bunch, and that's free entertainment.

This is kind of late, but my dad told me the same thing - don't be afraid of the high school quaterback type, look out for the old hillbilly with missing teeth, cigs rolled in his t shirt sleeve. THAT guy ain't afraid to get hurt! And has nothing ( or just fewer teeth ) to lose. I agree, there is a culture of jealousy in our country. Easy.

Because today's society has diminished the concept of personal property rights over the individual freedom to do what you want to help your self-esteem. Unfortunately, personal property rights is a cornerstone to our country's continued existence and without them you have lower self-esteem. But you can't make money on extorting the value of property rights, you make money on selling ways for people to feel better about themselves.

If you think things are bad now since the so-called justices voted God out of the public schools. Can't imagine how bad things will get now they are getting God's laws out of the public areas.

Because they can, Kids and most adults are not held responsible for their actions even when you catch em red handed. There was a time when lo life's made restitution for their dirty deeds, but that is a thing of the past. If you catch em in the act, the judge MIGHT fine em five hundred dollars, and he will for sure, cut em loose. Now you have a judge with five hundred dollars, and this is suppose to make you feel better every time you look at your busted equipment. Makes me mad and it's not even my tractor.

Sympathize with you Stan... just shake my head. The other day I had my GMC TRUCK floor matt stolen. I had it layed over top step of our front door, came to gain it through an auction sale I set up for a GM dealer who was moving from his old shop to one of those new multi-$$$ generic ones. I held the sale and paid the table workers and Mr. GM got $17000 for his left overs, auctioneer took $28500, telling Mr. GM he only took in $22000, I put up $4000 in advertizing and ended up sitting with MR. GM to look at the invoice from auctioneer who told me nothing was left to split after pay workers and adverizing. Mr. GM said was happy with $17k as he thought he was only going to get $8k so did not want to get involved. Mr. GM asked what he could do to satisfy me personnaly between him and me, I said I'll take that floor matt, he said ok, picked it up and found penny underneath, took penny too, have been showing the floor matt off now for going on three years, and every time I walked over it to go in or out my house it reminded be every time to wonder why people take things. It is gone now, maybe kids, maybe drug addicts, who knows. Reported theft to police, they came by and took report, when asked what value did I put on the matt, I said $28500. Policeman looked at me weirdly and said "what?" I said $28500. He said "why would you leave a $28500 rug laying on your front step?", I said. "I leave a $32000 Jeep parked out back, what's the difference?" The other day I got a package to fill out from the police under "Victims of Crime" to fill out and claim loss. So the moral of this long preamble is it's going to get broke, it's going to get stolen, so follow the game plan and REPORT it, if nothing else, its on file, right Rose in Austrailia. By the way, I still have the ...$28500 penny.

One time we left our c50 chevy in our tobacco field with the water tank for the highboy. Our tobacco field has a railroad that is right along one side of it. Well, that night, while we were all nice and snug in bed some idiot thought that it would be funny to throw a freaking brick. I don't know what they were trying to do, but what they ended up doing was puting about a 4 inch whole in the winshield. I'm not sure about you guys, but these type of farm trucks don't have anything but liablility insurance if it were ever to be in a crash, so that old winshield remains broken to this day with some duct tape over the hole. I guess people are just jealous that us farmers have to work our a$$es off for a living and want to make life that much harder. Thats just my thoughts

I usually get something screwed up during deer season. Or stolen - I have found my lawn furniture dragged out into the woods, overlooking a bait pile, fences cut, trash left around. One thing really got me was the water hydrant by the garden - I don't mind if somebody needs a drink of water, but why leave it running? People here have had horses shot, tractors shot or vandalized. And in 20 years my neighbors and I have NEVER had 1 person ask to hunt on our property. Thats why everywhere you go, you see no trespassing signs. BTW - I have hunted all my life. Easy

Sorry to hear what happened..In reading your posts from the past, you seem to be a decent, honest,law-abiding,honest citizen, the kind of person that America was built on..... We are faced with a certain percentage of our population that only wishes to tear down what the decent people have earned & built. It is really for the best that you did not catch the culprits in the act... if you had taken any action, you would be in deep trouble, the way things work today.... We are not far away from having to enclose anything we own in a fence made of Razor-Wire...
