Could some one tell me the correct way to set a carburetor on a JD model A ?it has the idle and load valve handles on top and they appear to be way off, tractor has good spark and compression, starts and runs when it is choked then starves out,THANK YOU.

A well worn two cylinder Deere gasser with a single barrel carb. Does well to even fire every now and again on the right cylinder at slow idle. When idling, ground the right plug and likely little will change in the way she runs. Coolant temp has to be 180 to 195F on gasoline and plugs 3116 Autolites. Odds are the many tiny orfices in the idle circuit are filled with rust, dirt and gummed fuel. Open the drain on the carb bowl. Will gasoline run a steady stream for 1+ minute without the rate dropping?

Before tinkering with the carb, are you sure you have a good , and continuous, fuel feed into the carb?

I have the book for my 41 A and it says for the load needle 3/4 turn and for the idle needle 1 and 1/2 turns. That's a good starting point and you can always adjust from there.
