I know this is a little OT but from what I see out on the road for some reason people obviously aren't being taught how to drive anymore by these private driving schools. I don't know what they supposidly teach anymore but you can bet when mine gets old enough to get behind the wheel he's gonna get some real world knowledge so he doesn't get himself killed..... .A few prime examples of the idiots I see.... I just got back yesterday evening from a trip down into SC, and I believe in the 400 miles I traveled this trip I saw more idiots than I've seen in a while. I drive a 26"long 32,000 lb truck and maybe that's the whole problem... the news has made people believe they (cars) always have the right of way over any kind of big truck and I'm always gonna be at fault in an accident. For that very reason I try my best to be one of the best and most courteous driver out there.....BUT... when your trying to merge onto the interstate right in the middle of a long downhill grade don't pace me to the end of the ramp instead of adjusting your speed to get in front of or behind me. If you expect me slam on my brakes, so you don't have to, and slow enough from 70 MPH for you to merge, think again....I would if I could but the laws of physics say it ain't gonna happen...One did this to me Tuesday and almost ran into two cars parked on the break down lane at the end of the ramp. If the idiot hadn't finally slammed on his brakes and got behind me he would have probably killed the people standing around the broken down car..... Next, If we're traveling down the interstate at 60 MPH and you see traffic ahead and cars slowing down to stop, don't cut in front of me and hit your brakes. I had plenty of room to slow down without hitting anybody til one car cut in and made my 200 feet into 100, then another made it 75 feet and since my lane had three less cars than yours you decided to leave me with 50 feet. The first car didn't worry me much I allowed for that idiot, the the second made me hit the Jake, on high, you dang near made me hit the ditch to save your sorry a--..... ..... ..Please guys, pass common sense driving knowledge along to your kids, your friends, in fact, pass it along anybody you think might need it. Big trucks do have big brakes but that doesn't mean anything. True there are bad truck drivers out there but as a whole we're the best, safest bunch on the road. Personally I'll be the first one to hold up traffic long enough for you to make a left across in front of me, so please don't just set there giving me a stupid look when I motion for you to go....and please return the favor sometime.....If your broke down I'll be glad to stop and help and even let you use my cell phone to call a ride if needed, In fact I did just that Tuesday night for a young college guy.....I don't mind helping anybody on the road, so please help me out by driving like you have some sense because I'd hate to know I killed somebody just because they didn't know how to drive..... ... I see this mess day in and day out, and ocassionally enough comes all at once that I can't bleed it all off, so Thanks for the chance to vent..... ..Ya'll be carefull out there..... ..

It ain't all the teenagers fault!
When I took the driving test for my CDL the inspector's only comment was that I was "hesitant' on the entrance ramp to I-25. I explained that I was trying to match my speed to traffic for a smooth merge. He said that when I hit the ramp I should peddal to the metal and I was big enough so they would move over. I didn't argue because I wanted my licence.

S.C. is full of bad drivers, I agree.... The biggest problem I see is that lots of drivers let driving interfere with Cell phone, make-up, drinking & drugging, & loud bass music. All kidding aside, very few drivers take it seriously these days. The young kids are so distracted by phones & booming music, that they cannot concentrate on driving. On top of that, they seem to have an Attitude toward other drivers. The salesmen are just as bad, phone in one hand, writing notes with the other.... A few weeks ago, as I got off the interstate, a car was stopped in the middle of the exit ramp, I smoked the tires getting stopped before I hit it. Driver was sitting there talking on phone & writing. What an idiot!!!!! !!!! I was talking to a state trooper a while back, he told me that although young men get blamed for most accidents, that he saw many more violations committed by young women.

I"ll take a crack at that one! But you see, I"ve only been a driving teacher for 32 years. I have seen Driver Education change over those years, mostly for the better. Most of the teachers and schools I"ve observed have improved their act greatly over the years. Classes are far more rigorous demanding than ever. Here in Michigan, students must drive 50 hours over at least 6 months before they can take their driving test to get a license. Students can start DE before they are 15 years old, which potentially gets them a YEAR to drive with mom & dad. One of the problems I have noted is what I call the "Greyhound effect." (You know - "take the bus and leave the driving to us!") We tuck the kids in the back seat, slap a gameboy in their hands, and a headset on their ears, and they"re all in their own little world. When we were kids, we were in the front seat watching everything our drivers did - by the time we got to DE we had it pretty well figured out. Too many kids today don"t have a clue. I"m apalled at the lack of knowledge these kids come to us with(out). Driver Ed teachers today have far harder job than ever before. We can"t teach common sense. Only experience and maturity can get that. Heard an expert on child psychology the other day - said that many kids don"t develop the ability to forsee the consequences of their actions, until they are in their mid twenties!

We"re limited to 30 classroom hours and 6 hours behind the wheel, as a state minimum. We can only do so much in that time. Then it"s mom and dad"s turn. If they"re on the ball, they"ll do far more. Unfortunately, parents aren"t always the best teachers or examples. This is by far the most important class kids will take in their school life. Auto accidents (excuse me, collisions,) are the greatest killers and maimers of our young people. We need to press for more rigorous classes, more time in class and more time on the road. Don"t blame the DE teachers - most are busting their **** out there, risking their lives to get these kids some experience. Anyone want to raise the driving age to 18?????

Isn't real world driving taught for years before anyone gets thier license? What to do, values and how to drive is shown to us everyday on TV, video games & the movies.

Everyone out there driving learned from their Parents. Driving training only teaches them to pass the test. Anytime a person is driving and there is a kid present, the kid is getting lessons

Being a young kid myself, I think the root of the problem is that 90% of young kids weren"t raised on farms. I was driving tractors and vehicles at a very young age and you quickly learn that the words "Weight" and "Stop on a Dime" aren"t even related.

Not to mention they get in vehicles with Automatic transmissions and put their foot to the floor..... ....If they had to plan shifts/stops I think there would be alot more caution across the board.

The sad part is that is usually takes a good accident to wake them up to reality.

You really hit the nail on the head. We were driving 5 and 10 ton rigs with straight cut gears as soon as we could reach the pedals. I took drivers ed in HS just to get the insurance break.

We only had to have one load "get away from us" to make respectful of the size of the vehicle, never mind having to clean up the mess afterwards.

There is a subtle difference these days with driving lessons. They are to enable the learner to pass the driving test, NOT to learn how to drive. There is a big difference, but once they have a full driving licence, they assume that is it.

We in America seem to think that we can expect the state to raise our kids. We leave EVERYTHING to the teacher, day care provider, etc. & expect that we can pay them as little as possible & then entrust the most valuable of our possessions (kids) to them & blame them when something goes wrong! A lot of us don't even insist that the kids know how to drive a stick, let alone REALLY know how to drive. The ones that survive turn out to be pretty good. Those that don't, weren't. We shouldn't blame the teachers. It is OUR fault that we neglected our duty to teach our kids, not just about driving, but about life itself. Venting now complete.

I have very little faith in young kids driving abilites anymore . You see more and more deaths and serious accidents from stupid mistakes .Thats not to say that older drivers don't have their share,,,just seems kids have no common sense when it comes to driving these days . They think they are indestructable and can do 80mph with no worrie. My sons girlfriend was killed in car wreck. 16 yrs old, sweet gal . when it came to driving she had no business behind the wheel . Cell phone to ear all the time , fast as she could go, and always drove with one leg tucked up under the other . she crossed centerline on way to school one morning . I don't what the answer is , but they need to learn that driving requires ALL their attention ! At al times .

I agree wiyh every thing you said except the merging into traffic part.I too drive a semi (65ft) and if there is ever an accident when merging into traffic the traffic coming on to the highway is legally bound to yeild and merge into traffic. That is why they put the red and white triangle sign in your lane.I recerntly went too court on this. One other thing that winds my clock is when peaple are stopped on the side of the road it used to be drivers got over for you now truckers 4whlrs evrybody thinks they need to take the paint off of just see how close they can get.Steve

I drive for a living and I see more crap than I care to remember. One simple rule I drive by is Might makes right. 4 wheelers yield to 6 wheelers,6 wheelers yield to 10 and so forth and so on. Over weight loads always have the right of way cause they can't stop.

Yep, went from Nashville almost to Memphis yesterday on I 40 ; traffic moving about 75 mph..... except for those 8-10 mile stretches where 2 of the trucks were side-by-side going 60-65.

Local primary school had a "career" day; invited policeman, fireman, doctor, etc. to tell about their lives and answer questions. Got to the cowboy and the teacher asked him to tell about his unique garb..... "Well, I work outside and the sun is hot, so I wear this 10 gallon hat to protect my face and ears; I wear these chaps to protect my legs from brush and thorns". Teacher asked about the tennis shoes; "Oh, I wear these so people don't get me confused with the truck drivers".

I've seen the things you mention happen. I'm not sure driver's training will fix it. I think it has a lot to do with attitude and common courtesy. Another thing I'd like to mention, wife and I have been impressed lately on a couple occasions about the places big rigs have had to get into for a drop. Tiny little businesses along busy little streets where the driver had to back in with no room to spare anywhere and cars lined all around. Those horse and buggy places weren't built for big rigs, but some poor driver gets that on his route. Hats off, when I see that I tell my wife that driver made his money the old fashioned way, he earned it.

Or maybe "enough idiots to go around"??

Let me tell ya of the idiots I see in my travels. Every day I drive 82 miles to work and 82 miles home. I tend to drive at or near the limit unless I am passing slower traffic and then only go up 5 or 10 to get around and out of the way. Odly enough I have only 4 stop signs in all that. So I'll start there. The first one is located where 3 seperate state routes merge. Two come from the north and split to their own dircetion, no stops. 1/2 mile down the third, picked up where the others split, splits off, no stop. The limit there is 55 all the way through. All traffic coming from the south or other directions has stop signs. It never fails that on one of the splits a large truck will pull out and force all traffic doing 55 to come to a complete stop. Those big boys will even run the signs thinkin that "I can get up to speed before you can cover 100' at 55", if they just get a running start at it. Once I pass this mess it's pretty clear saling for the next 20 miles or so. Unless you happen across the empty big rig running 50 in a 55. Its nice and flat through here. Passing generally isn't a problem. However should you try and commit the sin of passing a slow moving truck, you tend to be met with the ton-o-black smoke from the dual crome gods as he now has found two extra cylinders and gets that puppy up to 65 before you can get around him. Then rides you a$$ for 2 miles making sure you don't dare drop back down anywhere near the speed limit. Then you get to a small town that has a 40 mph speed limit no stop. Starts well out of town and doesn't pick back up till your quite aways out. Most trucks know better that to screw around in a small town. But seems like at least one thinks 60 is close enough to 40 and rides me like a tired ol mule all the way through. The next 15 is pretty open until we get close to the interstate. 55 for everybody and generally will tuck in behind a line of trucks. This is where I hit my second stop sign. Unspoken rule is trucks on the right car on the left. Pretty good grade going up here for the next little bit. Everybody is happy, unless.... But bout once, maybe twice, a week some lead foot pullin 80,000 has just gotta get in that left lane to show all us speed demeon car freeks what its like to spend two miles going up hill at 25 is like. Now is where the fun begins. Some d@mn fool in our state guberment thinks its "much, Much, MUCH" safer to have all the big boys running 10 slower than the tinney boppers on the interstate. In reality its more like 20 (55/75). Wonder where that idiot got his degree. Anyway, stay to the right is my motto. Keeps me from gettin run down. But to do that very long requires me to do 10 under. So I try to gage it, pass when it clear and wait when its not. So I get to see a lot of the little tricks the bigins play on the speed freeks. Wait till that 75 mph traffic is at your rear bumper swerve left and pass the truck in front of ya doing 55 at 56 mph, while a line of 75 mph traffic is standing on the brakes behind ya. 3-4 miles later blend back in after waiting for the lead race car to switch to the right lane, because he is now two truck lenghts pass the truck he passed. Catch the lead speed freek in between the two trucks doing 55, blocked in by two miles of backed up traffic going by. Next batch comes up and the fool that was just passed will do the same thing and pass the truck that just passed him. After 20 miles of this junk I get to a three lane section that generally at some point will have the big rigs in each lane all viving for the lead position. Of course its done a 56 mph with 30+ cars piled up behind. Well now I get to switch interstates and have only bout 15 to go. Here there is always some fool running 80 to catch ya, comes right over and slams on the brakes to make an exit. Trucks tend to stay left for this reason. I don't blame them, but here again that rocket sceintist in the state capital appearently doesn't drive this section of road very much. It it a real dog race between trucks trying to keep it constanct and the derby cars that think "if I just get pass this one my life will be different". Here I kinda take the gloves off. No way in he!! am I gonna stop in the middle of an interstate for some fool entering the highway like a bull dozer just because he thinks a 10 ton garbage truck has the right of way. That his merge sign not mine. And I have seen many a finger as he is slowing down the the break down lane. I finaly exit for my last stop. So do several trucks. Here 99% of the truck go's left and 99% of the cars go right. Industry to the left, office to the right. The exit is not exactly marked for two lanes but is plently wide enough for three. It never fails a truck will pull up to that sign as far right as he can get, leaving 20' of dry pavement on his left, wait 10 mins for the 3 lanes east and 3 lanes west to clear so he can dive straight across the 3 east lanes and make a left to go west. All the while traffic is backing up onto the interstate because the off ramp is full of folks waiting on his a$$ to turn right and enter the complex where I work.

Then I get to deal with a whole different set if idiots!

Hi Wayne, Boy you have hit something on the head! I honestly think the worse the driver, the easier they get their driver's license. I drove out to Carlinville, IL, about 350 miles this week to visit a college. I saw all of these things happen. I always try to get over, but sometimes you can't. I really hate it when someone is trying to pass me so I can't get over. I actually got stuck between two cars like that and had to slam on the brakes because neither would slow down.
Honestly, I didn't see 5 highway patrolmen the whole trip. Something should be done because people drive like they're maniacs going to a fire. Oh well.

You know what I've noticed in my area? We don't get much snow so when we do it really slows us down. When we slow down all of a sudden we are more friendly. I've noticed that drivers will wave a friendly hello when vehicles meet, people out in their yards will wave at passerbys, etc. The only way I can figure it is that it slows us down to the point of us seeing each other as just "folks" and not road competitors. The reason we are in such a hurry is we want more "stuff." Our generation has more time saving gadgets than any generation. So, what did we do with them? We used them so we could fill our day with more running. I've never heard a man on his death bed say "I wish I'd worked more and spent more time away from my family." I'm just as guilty about rushing but as I get older I'm going to slow down.I'm realizing that time is more precious and has more good memories than material things. You are right on in your assessment.

Since we're venting...I ride US 1 from Princeton to New Brunswick and back every day and find that the trucks are just getting out of hand. Especially the garbage trucks running out of NY to Pa and back. We 4 wheelers are constantly dodging in and out to avoid the trucks. The physics of trucks is just so much different from cars! Eventually either cars or trucks gotta go! Maybe trucks should be limited to the 10PM-6AM slot so that car traffic can move better. Maybe truckers should have separate facilities like the railroaders and the airplane people do. The NJTP made a good start from Exit 8A north with separate truck lanes. Now we gotta expand that concept...

I drive a truck a bit...

I agree I have so distane for the ones that drive by my house.. I got passed the other day on a 2 lane going up a hill (I was only doing 50 --but 55 is the limit) he almost cut me off to keep from hitting the oncomming cars.. they stopped for him.. he then drove 1mile farther to the coal mine.....

oh and that was just the last time he did it to me.. he's done it before.

I was given the responsibility for driving a truck (an army duce and a half) when I was 3... I failed. so I was not let drive again till I was 5. (I did the swinging arms stuff on the wheel-when dad needed it held straight to load hay)
