The ignition problem has been diagnosed as a broken "actuator". My mechanic (who knows my mechanical and electrical capabilities pretty well) strongly advised against my undertaking of this project. So on to the next phase of "correcting the problem".

What if, and this is a big "what if", I wire directly into the starter soleniod with a push button mounted in the cab of the pick-it-up truck? Seems like it should work. I can start it now by turning the key on, popping the hood and jumping it with a screwdriver, sooooo am I crazy to be thinking this? What potential harm am I looking at? Is this exceptionally hard on the starter solenoid? What size wire would you recommend?

Thanks,

Dug

Hello Dug--In my Ford, the actuator controls all of the ignition. When it broke, turning the key didn't energize any of it. The actuator is a diecast piece that runs down the side of the column to a little electric switch that has off, on and start positions ("on" to "start" spring loaded). I dismantled the column cover to get to that switch and use a nail set to start it. (was told by Ford dealers that they don't stock that part) My point is that maybe your actuator rod isn't really broken. Good Luck ChrisH(IA)

No biggy just run a 14 ga wire to the starter. Had to do the same thing to my 85 Chevy Truck. Used the button for years that way. Never did figure why the switch would not turn all the way to start and putting in a starter button was so much easier & cheaper of a way to fix it. PS I also fixed it the day it broke needed to drive the truck. Just make sure the wire going to the solonoid is making a good conection befor you put a button in. That could also be your problem. My dad had an 88 gmc farm truck that started like that. somethig in the steering column got messed up and would not turn past the run position so him and a friend wired it up with a push button. worked good. still was working when the truck got shipped to the wrecker. Steve

The key turns the ingnition on, just will not engage the starter.

Any suggestions on gauge of wire I should use?

Dug

14 gauge will do fine. and run your hot wire from the fuse panel to your button, then from button to solnoid.

You need to remember that by going direct to the starter you are bypassing all safety switchs. Which means that if you have an automatic transmission the starter will run when you push the button no matter what gear it is in.

Herschel, thats true, but how many times do you park your truck with it in gear? it just comes natural to stick it in park rat before you turn the key off.

Redmud,How many times do you not put it in park? It only takes once. And you might not be the only who drives it.
