Can someone tell me the oil recommendations for a 14 HP Kohler engine for a garden tractor? I bought one and there is no manual with it. I am not sure of the age of the engine, possibly it is from the early 90's but I am not sure.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Especially the link to Kohler engines. I got the operators manual and the service manual there. Again, thanks.

Hey Twin Creek; I've got a 14 horse kohler magnum engine on an "89" model Wheel Horse lawn tractor. The kohler manual recommends a good quality single viscosity 30wt. motor oil.As Mr. bus Driver say's in his post the single viscosity should result in less oil consumption.I have used both multi-viscosity and single viscosity and I don't have to add oil between changes.I use Napa brand motor oil.I believe Valvoline makes Napa's oil.Have a good day!

Never owned a Kohler. My Briggs book says using a single weight oil- 30- will result in less oil usage than with multi-weight oils and I have found that to be true.

I have an onan that used about a pint every 8 weeks. Changed to Mobil 1 and mowed all last summer before I had to add a pint. Made alot of difference.

I've been using Mobil One 10w-30 in both of my 12 horse K301's. Started using it when one of them had a sticking exhaust valve and it seemed to help a lot.

Have since rebuilt them both and after running 30wt for a few hours of break-in, went back to Mobil One.

So far, no problems.

It's easy to get the official work from Kohler. Owner's and service manuals are available for FREE download at the site below. (Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to view them.)

Depending on the temperature and the model of the engine, it varies.
According to Kohler, the old K series and Magnum engines all run 30wt oil in the summer and 5w30 in winter.
If it a Command engine, OHV, it needs to use 10w30. The reason, the newer Command engines have hydraulic valve lifters and if you do not use the 10w30 oil, the oil is too thick and the lifters can get to ticking. Mark has had good luck with synthetic oils, I am not 100% on this, never used it, so I cannot let you know one way or the other on that. I know I have used the oils recommened for years with very good luck. I do change oil every 50 hours and usually the oil is as clean going in as going out. but to get this, you need to start this from day one or after a rebuild.
So, now it is a personal opinion on what to use.

I run 1.5 to 2 qts of Mobil 1 15w50 syn in my lawn equip (including 2 Kohlers....15 and 17.5 hp). Being syn it resists heat better and I can go a whole season with honey colored oil.

Probably run anything you want. 30 wt hd was the standard for many years. Main thing is to keep it clean. With parafin based oil (regl motor oil) that may mean 2 to 3 changes per season depending on usage and conditions. That's why I like syn.
