Hello to all; I'm asking this for a friend.... he is looking (hard) at a 4010 JD. They are telling him it is up graded with 4020 sleeves and pistons. It is a diesel, with a leaking head gasket. They say they will fix it, and ck the head and injectors. Tractor has 50% rears, one weather ck'd, frts 25%. Wide frt end' hood was painted and str. after something fell on it. One owner, and he got to talk with him. Tac was broke about 5k....$6,850, or not over 7,500 if they fix it. So, what does everyone think? Thanks ahead, and I'll print out the input and give it to him

My understanding is unless told not to by the owner that all 4010s were upgraded with 4020 kits when overhauled. A friend who worked for a Deere dealer told me that starting somewhere around 1985 you could only get 4020 kits for the 4010. CLW

It makes a difference which 4020 pistons and sleeves. Those for the side console tractor lead to poor compression and poor starting because of a lower deck height.
