Okay fellows,..once again, i find the need to require your wisdom and knowledge. I have a 1952 Moline V. I've replaced the spark plugs, points, plug wires, 6 volt coil, 6 volt battery and 6 volt cutout. The only parts i still have doubts about are the condenser, (new but could be bad out of box),..and the rotary switch located on the steering brace, to the left of the seat. Still, it refuses to make a spark on the points. Any idea where i might check...?

thanks
Dan Mitchell

Check for voltage getting to the coil.make sure the points are the neg. side of the coil.Use a meter if you can not just looking for sparking at the points. They are new and should arc very little.Just see if the plugs fire outside the cylinders.

I need to double check but I think the V has a positive ground like most tractors of that day so the lead from the positve post of the coil should go to the distributor. If you turn the distributor so the points are closed and then break them apart with a screwdriver (switch on) do you see a spark at the points?

J.,I have one book that says coil polarity does not change with batt. polarity and another book that says it does.[Both auto not tractor]However someone here once said it should be checked both ways on positive ground to see which gives the hotter spark.Seems tech writers werent surein the books.

Dr,
Your one book is wrong. Positive ground is always positive coil post to distrubutor, negative ground is always the negative post to the dist. If wired backwards you get a weak spark because the plugs are trying to fire backwards (to center post instead of from it, chassis of vehichle is absorbing some spark and you will have low power mainly showing itself at low RPM's.

According to the book Auto Engines and Electrical Systems used in tech school where I took auto electric ;Neg ground neg coil terminal to distributor ,pos ground pos coil terminal to distributor. Then to check hold a pencil tip between plug wire end and top of spark plug to ensure coil polarity. Also a test to bypass a faulty switch is to do what old said. With switch on test light will light between dist terminal on the coil and grounded coil housing[that checks for open windings in the coil]

Hi J.

thanks for responding. I'm pretty sure i have a postive ground and rewired the tractor according to an Avery schematic. However, you have me wanting to double check the positve post of the coil to the distributor once again. I'll try that trick with the screwdriver tomorrow morning. Thanks again

Dan

Check the coil like these guys are saying otherwise you will have weak spark. Trade out a coil from something else you got around to see before buying another one. Something I always check now is for cracks in the dist. rotor. Had a brand new rotor that was cracked give me fits a while back on a dist. but yes the new was bad. It can happen.

Hot wire it and see what happens if you have spark hot wired then you know its from the coil back that is the problem, Bad switch of wires if the hot wireing works
