I have a John Deere 212 whose lifter snapped this winter, and I would have to buy a whole new assembly or have the old one welded on... (expensive). Do I bag this and get a 214 posted for sale for $1,000? Or is the 214 too big for an acre sized yard? HELP!

Have 5 acres and the drive belt doesn't want to stay on when the deck is lowered to ground level. Was working just fine last week. Have tried almost eveything, 'cept the shotgun! There must be something I'm missing.

No way the lift mechanism could be more than a tractor. Have you checked Ebay yet? I see them on there from time to time. And I can't imagine the welding being that expensive. You could pick up a little 110v arc welder for $100 and do it yourself. Maybe you're located near one of the members of this board who would do it for you for a small fee. Where are you located?

The two tractors are more or less identical outside of engines. Same attachments will fit.

What do you mean by "broke the lifter"? I'm taking this to mean something with the attachment lift. If that's the case, it shouldn't be too tough to find a used part.

Or did something break in the engine?

Try looking around the following site:

rebuild the 212, stay with what you know the history of....the 214 is the same tractor with a couple extra hp which you likely won't need or utilize. Even a JD can be a money pit if someone has neglected it over the years...at least you know what you have with yours.

Just my .02.

I have a 212, great little machine. I think the main difference between the two is HP, the 214 has 14 hp. Bigger and more powerful is always better, right?
