To answer your last question, yes. The pto can be turning or engaged without having the tractor in gear. Like when your running a generater.

Brit: Very good question and you received good answers. I'm not going to suggest any better. I heard this same question asked once, the guy was given very good answers. Then some smart guy in crowd decided to ask if any one knew what dead PTO was. One of the guys responded," Yes, watching you walk to work in the morning."

Live Power takeoff, starts and stops by its oun lever.....a non power stops every time you push the clutch in on the tractor.....the tractor stops also.....

independent PTO as in Cockshutt- the inventor, a lever to put the pto in or out, totally independent of the foot clutch.

Two stage foot clutch, as in Massey 65 and others
push the foot clutch all the way down move the
pto lever to engage, put the tractor in gear,
release the clutch , the tractor moves and the pto turns . Push the clutch part way down, the forward motion stops and the pto continues to turn.

The last type, push the clutch down engage the
pto lever, put the tractor in gear release the clutch the tractor moves and the pto turns.
push the clutch in the tractor stops and the pto
stops. used in most older tractors like the ford 8 N

CLW is correct in his definition of live pto. Some people get confused when the term 'independent' pto is added. IPTO means you can START operation of the pto without clutching. IPTO is thus live and independent. With some live pto systems you still need to clutch to initially start pto operation. Typical live pto would be a WD Allis with the hand clutch, or some Ford or similar tractors with the two-stage clutch.

Live PTO means the PTO will keep running when the clutch is depressed and forward motion of the tractor is stoped. On non-live PTO is when you depress the clutch the PTO stops also, which stops your equipment that is hooked to the PTO.

Does this mean that I can leave the tractor out of gear and still operate the PTO by using the PTO lever and the clutch?
Sorry for the bonehead questions,I have never owned a tractor and want to make sure I get one that has the features I want. And thank you all very much for your thoughtful answers.
