There's also a filter INSIDE the pressure regulator block. It looks like a hydraulic valve, but with no handle. Remove it from the tractor, take off the front cover and it's screwed into there. Mine plugged and blew the whole system!

thanks for the info..will pull that cover & check it! thought my pump was bad& after checking prices, mounted a front pump off the crankshaft, altered the plumbing to use the original valves& sump.I was disgusted when it still would not work. i have now removed that screen completely & installed spin on filter assembly & it now works great! also replaced old mechanical steering with full hydraulic orbital steering, used old ford car pump& hydraulic cyl. from tractor supply...think about that for awhile!

You'll have to remove the hyd. reservoir under the seat. A fine screen filter is fastened to reservoir top.

It probably hasn't been serviced since it was new. Having to take that reservoir cover off once every couple decades ain't that big a deal. The filter screen has quite a large surface area, so it won't plug up very often.

A soulution comes to mind and its John Deere? Sure, but be sure and get a new one because some of the ones the same vintage as your 300 are no more service friendly, some worse.
