Hey, You smart tire guys,

One tire is 9.5L-15SL and the other is a 9.5L-15L.

What's the difference? The width? What's that "S" stand for?

Thanks,

Allan

Congratulations Allan in reply to Allan in NE, 03-26-2005 12:27:55
Whether you know it or not, you did us all a big favor. You brought up a subject which no one has the right answer to, but which affects every one of us when we buy a replacement tire if we want our implement or tractor to look symmetrical and sit level.

As mentioned, I bought a replacement tire with what I thought to be the right dimensions but SL was also there and it was different; enough to make my round baler sit lopsided.

So guys, next time we go to get a tire, take a look at the tire on the other side and if it is an "SL" get an SL; if not the converse is true.

Again, thanks Allan.

Mark

P.S.
Nice paint job. Looks like you are about finished with the restoration; course when you're finished you need go out and get a rattle can of BLUE or GREEN and give it a couple of squirts so it'll start up when you try to start it. Har Har..... Grin

What's hanging on the wall; relics of older rebuilds.....asuming that they are steering wheels? Looks like ya been busy.

Them's racin' tires, Allen. You put the larger one on the right hand side when yer runnin' Indy, cause yer always turnin' left. Keeps the differential from havin' to work so hard.

At least your "pun" could make a little sense; unlike the melting snow thing.

According to the Goodyear Farm Tire Handbook pg.17 " SL = Service limited to agricultural usage". There is no further description of what exactly that is but I would guess it"s low speed and primarily off-road. HTH ;>)

At least that makes sense. I have experienced that size difference with the SL rating when putting another tire on my round baler.

But ag tires are SL regardless and all that I have ever seen are rated 25 mph max.

As far as a tractor front tire or a utility flotation tire where else would you use them.....maybe a JD Gator or something.

Dunno either.

Naw,

You know how I am with this lump growin' outta the side of my head and all. :>(

I saved the one tire off my 686 when I replaced all of it's tires.

Then I put it over on this ol thing and just noticed the difference in the size on the tire is all.

Geeeeze!!! Was just wondering. ('Sides, black stripes are kinda wacko lookin', don't ya know). :>)

the L stands for low-pro
the SL stands for slow--single ply-- low-pro( like a bias tire)
a low mileage -slow speed ( less than 25 mph)-taller tire for the left side of tractor for doing a lot of road work.

I ain't buyin that either as both my tires are 8 ply rated utility flotation and one is marked SL and different diameter with everything else being the same.

The "S" stands for snow and is normally found on the right side of the tractor. The hieght is approxiamately 3/4 inch taller and due to the difference in sizes of tires a heat friction is built while plowing snow which helps to melt the snow and soften ice for easier removal. If the "S" is located on both sides of the tractor, a heat minimization will often occur which actually enhances the freezing and makes snow and ice removal nearly impossible in many circumstances.

I like this answer better. The heat buildup would be where? If on the front axle, since neither tire is connected to the other it just means that one takes longer to make a complete rotation. No bigie.

If on the rear, there would be a very very slight "differential" difference in the diff where one axle would turn slightly faster than the other and any heat would be in the cluster gears driven by the ring gear. Snow wouldn"t have a clue what"s going on, nor would you.

I have it on good authority that the "S" tire is speed rated at 180 MPH for faster plowing.

I think you may be mistaken. Since VR tires are rated for up to 120 mph and ZR tires above that, I must assume that an S tire would be somewhere below 100 mph. Better replace that slow speed tire before something happens. Us green guys don't have these speed rated tire issues!

That's good to know guys. I was really in a quandry the other day when I got the new "No flat" Gensco airplane tires for the front end of Puffy and when I was bolting them on I noticed the sidewall and they are only rate up to 225 mph. I won't get any mowing done if I have to keep the M under 225. Later, Harley
