Where to find a rebuilder?

Hi. Maybe the first question I should ask is, "Can this be rebuilt?" I posted on the AC board last week about parts for a 5220 Deutz-Allis steering box. She went plum out this weekend. Steering wheel just free wheels. Got 'er apart and found every one of the ball bearings had backed clean out from between the worm gear & inside of the cam. They were stuck in 2 slots on the back side of the cam. Those slots appear to be there in order to put the bearings in after the cam has been slid over the worm. This is a little more complicated worm gear & sector setup than I've encountered before. Any clue who might rebuild this in the So. Ill./SE MO area? Thanks.

FTM

This almost sounds like a recirculating ball screw type of set-up. That same system is used in lots of motor vehicles. Do you have any clue as to who built the steering gear?

I'm not sure. The tractor is a Toyosha, but I don't know if they supply their own steering or not. The only experience w/ manual steering I've had was the worm gear and sector in my '56 Ford pickup. I'll check around and see if any local shops can rebuild this. Or, I reckon if I could find the ball bearings, I could probably do it w/a little coaching.

I rebuilt a Ford 5000 steering box and in the process knocked my part box off the workbench and lost some of the bearings. I went to a local bearing supply house in McKinney, Tx and they had the size bearing I needed --- they had a very extensive selection that included metric and SAE sizes.

PS: The bearings were .47 a piece.
