I have a 1954 jd 60 with a wide front end. new starter, tire fair, paint fair, runs, new muffler, stored inside and drives however trans will slip if under heavy load. I live in Canada and have been offered 2000 cdn for it. wondering if this is a fair price

Is it a rowcrop wide front, standard high seat or standard low seat? What is the serial number? Can we assume you recently inherited this tractor? Where in snowy Ontario are you located?

I would have to get the serial number but it is a row crop and I would believe a standard high seat. I am located near windsor ontario.

A good service manual or an inquizative, experimental mind can help you tighten the clutch on a JD. hint take cover off belt pulley and look inside. The 1650 might be harder, if the clutch free play is okay you are probably looking at replacement.

LM,

I gotta be honest with you. If that tractor is in good shape and has power steering, I think the price is just a little light.

That clutch can be tightened in about 3 minutes; no big deal on the slip.

Dunno, wish I were closer to ya. :>)

The tractor does not have power steering. I had intentions of restoring this tractor but just do not have the time. so I guess what is a fair price for the tractor. I believe the trans slip is because of non tapered gears that are used in the trans on those tractors.

Hi Allan,

How do you tighten up a clutch? I'd be interested to know, because my 1650 diesel clutch slips a bit too... I didn't know there was hope for it. :) If you want you can send me an e-mail at paweljip@yahoo.ca

Thanks alot and God bless,

Pawel

Any freeplay in the clutch pedal when released? Have you greased the clutch as per the operator's manual?

Pawel,

No Sir, the only hope on your tractor is a new clutch.

However, on those old two pops, ya just yank the cover on the belt pulley and cinch the three clutch bolt castle-nuts up one notch of the cotter pin (stiffen up the over-center adjustment).

Very easy to do; fact of the matter is, the old sisters demand it every so often. :>)

Anyway, my next tractor is going to be a JD 2 cyl... lol :)

God bless,

The two cylinders clutch setup is totally different from your oliver. Clutch work on yours or most other than the two cylinders means splitting the tractor. With their horizontal cyliders, the crank sits sideways with the flywheel on one end and the clutch assemble on the other, making it easy and accessable to work on. I don"t know for sure, but other than external linkage adjustments, there ain"t much else you can do with yours. Someone can correct me if I"m wrong. Brokenwrench
