When buying a chiesel plow is it true you need 10hp per shank? I want to use one because i sell tilled top-soil to the public, and in the tennessee summer i need something to bust up the top 3 or 4 in so i do not kill my tiller, any body else got any ideas? Keep in mind i only have a 85hp tractor, yes INDYDIRTFARMER it is GREEN!

In easy pulling soil you can get by with as little as 7-8 hp per shank. In hard pulling soil 10 hp per shank is barely adequate.I pull a IH 14 shank 10-12" deep with a stock 1456 Farmall and run 6 mph.Go 10 miles away and I could probably only pull a 12 shank.

As others have said it sounds like you need a field cultivator. You could pull a 16 ft field cult 3-4" deep with 85 horses.

If you can't find a field cultivator, use the chisel plow- you don't need to run it full depth on the first pass- just keep the lift cylinder raised a bit.

I pull an 8' Haymie chisel with a 4010 in black clay. (4010 is around 75 hp pto.) Has 7 tynes odly spaced with a long tongue and hyd lifted tires. Comercially built in Amarillo, Tx.

1st go on virgin soil is a black smoker and only about 6" deep. By the 3rd round I have them buried (about 10-12"). Great plow.

Like to use 3rd gear out of 8.

I've tried 3 pt plows or better described as cultivators and have found that if you want to dig, you have to get a long tongue and get the tynes back from the tractor. The 3 pts just skip over the ground....unless you already have it plowed.

Thanks for the promo! Like it has been mentioned, a field cultivator would be the ideal implement for your needs, but they are just a bit harder to come by in this part of the world, compared to a chisel plow. I don't see where a chisel plow WOULDN'T do what you need done. You could get whatever you can find at a fair price, and remove shanks if needed. "Twisted points" do a better job of mixing soil, but they pull harder too. I'd think that an 85 HP tractor SHOULD pull a 7 to 9 shank chisel plow at your shallow depth quite easily. (ESPECIALLY BEHIND A GREEN TRACTOR!!!!! !!!!! !!)

If thats all you want is the top 4" look for a old dozer disk this will tear soil up no matter how dry.

I'd look for a field cultivator as well, unless you have very hard clay compacted.

And 10 hp would be a minimum for a chisel, I ran a 10 shank with my 85 hp tractor 2 years, felt sorry for the tractor, could not pull it fast or deep enough to really do a chisel plow job. Should go 8-11 inches deep with a chisel plow, and moving a little faster helps it shatter the soil.

However, if you have clear dirt, a 3pt 6-8 shank chisel plow that doesn't handle crop trash is sold for the price of scrap steel these days..... Or a 10 shank can have a few shanks removed if you don't need to cover 100 acres in 2 days.....

if you only need the top 3-4 inches busted, you dont need a chisel plow..that is for 8-14" deep....for that you need 10 hp per shank. I would get an field cultivator - available cheap....
