I have a 1974 IH454. it runs fine. but just latley it wont turn over when the temp goes below 32. it has never had a starting problem like this. it acts like the battery is flat even when its hooked up to my truck that has 2 big batteries. I can hear the solinoid on the starter throw the bendix in but thats all that happens. no spin at all.

Good morning Joe. All of the stuff covered so far makes sense and can be. I had a similar situation, and was my fault, stupid mistake on my part. Didn't have an inspection cover over the flywheel and was actually ice built up on the flywheel teeth. When the starter drive travelled that very short distance and hit the teeth, hit a wedge and stopped dead in it's tracks. Above freezing was ok. Probably isn't your problem, but never would've guessed was mine.

Could be a weak battery, and can bypass yours with jumper cables straight to the starter bendix from a known good source as previously stated, to eliminate your battery. Could be the bendix too, or a loose conection to the bendix, or a switch. Conductors get cold, they contract and maybe aren't making a good connection. They get warm and expand, and maybe are making a better connection then. Good luck.

Mark

It sounds like you are not getting sufficient current to the starter. Check your battery first. Could be bad contacts in the solenoid or worn brushes or dirty commutator in the starter motor. Check the voltage at the solenoid connection to the starter. If it is low, say below 9.5 Volts (12V system) during starting, replace the solenoid. If not, you may need to replace the brushes in the starter motor or clean the commutator or both.

have you checked your battery, it may have frozen, if this is the case, get rid of it, it is dangerous to try to start it. If this isn't the case, try "hot wiring" the starter witht the jumper cables. If this still doesn't work, take the starter in to an auto electric shop and have it tested. Hope this helps.
