Adding Anti scalp wheels

I ended up sticking with the Troy Bilt Super Bronco with Vtwin B&S 21hp automatic mower over the Cub Cadet with single Kohler but the one issue that is making me wish I had switched is the lack of front anti scalp wheels.

Can you add anti scalp wheels to the front of a MTD deck without mounts? Seems like drilling a few holes and using 2 bolts would be fine. Does anyone sell the wheels with mounts?

Thanks

I went to Sears today to look at some Craftman mowers and they have a few models that have bolt on Anti scalp wheels on thier decks. The front and rear ones bolted on. They also had quite a few that had been welded on.

I am going to call MTD and also Craftsman to get cost on them and see if I can make them fit.

I am not looking to have the weight of the deck carried on the wheels just to add some anti scalp feature of the front of the deck and possible saftey to protect the blade if I hit some uneven surface.

Just an idea but I think adding them would be great .

A good number of years ago we had a Sears garden tractor with a mower and no anti scalp wheels. We got some rollers ment for the back end of the center of a boat trailer. They were about 6 - 8" wide and had brackets that made the job easy to put on.
Just a thought.

One thing to remember, anti scalp wheels are not supposed to carry the deck. They should be adjusted to just clear the ground in the mowing position. On the Cub Cadet model the anti scalp wheel bracet is welded to the deck.

First, I"m not familiar with your particular application, but I too have wished for front wheels on my under-tractor deck. Lack of clearance with front tractor wheels, and structural integrety of deck have stalled me so far. If the clearance problem is solved, will the deck stand having it"s entire weight supported on one wheel bolted to the front of the deck - it"s bound to happen, that you hit an obstruction just right, and the entire weight will be on the one wheel. I would suggest some sort of reinforcement of the deck where you attach the wheel, not only from a weight bearing, but a forward motion situation as well. There are probably casters available at an industrial supply which would work for your intended project.

Check with MTD if possible, their decks are used in different applications and(used)to be coded such as "G","H" etc.Production cost of lower priced line of tractors results in elimination of some items over more expensive,ie:welded skids instead of rollers/wheels,plastic instead of metal pieces, plastic or bronze bushings instead of bearings etc.If your particular deck is also used on a "high line" tractor,it well may be equipped with wheels or rollers on that application. Most older MTDs use a "suspended" deck that hangs from the tractor and any wheels only contact the ground for anti scalp reasons.Other tractors(Murray)for instance uses a "rolling" deck which it designed to actually roll along the ground on its own wheels/rollers,pulled along by the tractor somewhat like a trailer. On suspended decks cutting hight is set by tractor lift lever,On trailing decks height is set by deck wheel adjustment.Altering the deck with unauthorized modifications may void your entire warranty, again a reason to check w/mfg.
