I am interested in buying a used tracter with enough HP to run a large round baler. A local dealer has a rebuilt Ford 4000. He has replaced the original 3 cyl. engine with a rebuilt 4 cyl. engine from a Ford 5000. The engine has new pistons and rings, the crank has been turned and the engine line bored. He has also replaced the hydraulics and the power steering pump. I have been cautioned the the 5000 engine might cause future problems. Has anyone had any experience with this situation? To buy or not to buy...that is the question. The price is in line with blue book values.

Not into bailing but I'd be looking for a good used 6000 Diesel--not the Commander model, but the larger and later model ('70's) with the 4 cylinder, I think its about 70 hp. Used one awhile back pulling a 12' disc--its a horse.

Blue book for what? How do the wiring harness, draglink, hood and radiator fit? Who would put that kind of money into a 4 cylinder engine and morph it into a three cylinder tractor? It must have a three cylinder clutch in it; will that stand up? Sounds like a science project that someone is trying to cash out of. I'd keep looking.

you might be able to operate a small to mid size round baler (4 x 4 0r 4x5 ) but i think any thing larger would be too much for a ford 4000. it just don't have the weight to keep from being "pushed" by the baler momentum.
