Someone told me that when he had a load of
gravel brought to his driveway that the old
gent dragged an old tractor or truck tire on
a chain around to level and smooth the gravel.

Anybody ever heard of this?

What kind of lash-up do you use? Seems like
it should work.

I have used old chain link fence for leveling soft soils in times past. Also works great as a mat to drive over soft soil or sand.

I made one with rear backhoe tires. I used a two inch pipe to hook them one to and staggered the lenght of chain where every other one is about eight inches shorter. This lets them over lap a little. Then I use a cable about two feet from each end and hooke to the tractor with that.I use it do drag out gravel to drag pastures in the spring and also to drag plowed ground. It works for me.

This is what bed springs were made for. And sometimes you need an old sheet of plywood to lay on top of the springs so you can add weight.

Here is a link to a site with all kinds of plans for home built stuff. This one shows tires bolted together to make a drag. I did this and pull it behind the mower to break up manure piles in the pasture. Works pretty well, but not as well as I would like. The tire drag plan is #6212.

Sounds like it would work pretty good. I think I would use an old tractor tire my self. To hook up to it instead of wrapping a chain around it, you could drill a hole through the tread near the bottom (when laying flat) and put a big eye bolt through it with a plate or BIG washer on the inside with a nut. Sounds like it would work!!

How about using some real "redneck engineering", and using an old bedspring?

You might be a redneck if you drag the bedsprings
behind the tractor to level the road, and your
wife's 650-pound cousin 'Beau' is still laying
on 'em eatin a box of Krispy Kreme's and watchin'
the Reverend Lee on the portable.
