I'm new to clutches, all I know is I need to buy a "clutch kit" for my truck so the local mechanic can put it in next week. I went on to Napas online site and I think what I'm looking for is called a clutch pac, but they don't have pictures, lists, or discriptions of what is included in a "clutch pac", just the disc size and a price. The remanufactured clutch pacs are about $100, but it says the friction disk is made of "damp organic", now just what the heck is that?. Sounds like something your supposed to eat, I wonder how "damp organic" would hold up?, sure doesn't sound like much to me, but I haven't a clue what it is, so I figgured I'd ask the experts here. The other one that they list is a high performance clutch pac thats brand new for a hefty $489, quite a difference in price compaired to a remanufactured clutch pac.
Anybody had any experience with the Napa remanufactured clutch pacs?.
Any other brands I should look at or good places to get a good kit at a good price?.
youir help is greatly appreciated,

I've put 2 Luk clutches in, one in a F150 and one in the (now ex girlfriend's) toyota tacoma. Both Kits were very complete, had everything including throwout bearing and pilot bearing. Put a Centerforce in a buddy's Camaro, very rugged, felt alot better then the stock one. Cost is the deciding factor on this one.

I gave my local Napa store a call and got hold of their really lousy partsman, this guy is incredible, I hate to think of the thousands of dollars he has lost them in sales over the years because I usually can't get parts if he's the guy behind the counter. I call him up and tell him what I want, and he tells me his computer doesn't show remanufactered clutch kits, and he asks if I got a part number off the national Napa site, and I said no, so I went back online and bought them back up and I hit redial, gave him the part number, he says "yup, $78.xx, I'd have to special order that", then he says, "thats way too cheap and somethings wrong, wow thats way too cheap", then he changes his tune and says "I can't get that, I won't even try to order it", he then says, "the part number is no good and doesn't show anything in my computer", I says "oh, the part number is no good eh?" (what kind of idiot does he think I am, I gave him the part number and he immediatly rattled off the exact price I was seeing on my computer screen when it was brought up on his end), he says "no, not here". It was on the National Napa site and he flat out refused to order it because he thought it was too cheap. I think he thought I might order a brand new clutch for $250, but with the poor 90 day guarantee, by far the worst I have seen so far as most come with a 1yr, and I even found one with a 5yr for $2 more than the Napa one, and with the way he refused to try to order the one I wanted, forget it, I'll take my buisness elsewhere.

I then went to advance auto as I had gone to their website and found one after clicking on their online parts cataloge, this brings up another window with www.partsamerica.com, ok, well I looked up clutches for my truck, and they have one for $252.xx with a 5yr warranty, and I sez, thats the one I want. So I went in my local advance auto and I tried to give the guy behind the counter the part number, but no he had to look it up himself and I had to tell him the year, make and model, engine size etc.., then found the part number off that website matches one in their computer, but it's on a different clutch made by a different company, so I ask him what gives and he tells me www.partsamerica.com is an affiliate, but not actually advance auto and that they can't get everything off that site so even though thats what pops up when you click on the advance auto online cataloge, they can't get that particular clutch I want. Nice!, well, I'm going to order straight from partsamerica and be done with it.

I read your thoughts on the damp organic clutch material, and I think I have it figgured out now. They make brake pads from peanuts, and must be able to do the same to make clutches.

Hi Jon,
I am wondering why your local mech. wants you to do the parts running for him? When I do have something in a shop I trust my wrench to put in the parts that will work and stay working. If his parts screw up and dont work, he stands behind it at no cost to me. If I supply my parts and something goes wrong it's my fault.

I would recommend a centerforce clutch kit. They have a rather trick method of generating extra clutch holding force(not that you need it for a v-6). I would be concerned that the napa clutch would be some piece of "made in Mexico" junk.

You may also want to try www.rockauto.com. They carry a complete clutch kit(throw-out bearing, clutch plate, pressure plate) made by Beck and Arnley for $248.

Prices seem to swing all over the place. I went on advance auto parts website and found some helpful advice on there and I am now informed as to what I need. They have 1 kit that comes with a 60 month limited waranty made by the SPX Corperation for $252, the other 2 kits that they offer only have 1yr warantys and start at $200. I have no problems spending the extra $52 for something thats going to keep my truck out of the shop for hopefully alot longer, however, thats still long ways off from Napa's remanufactured clutch pacs for $100, unless I am misunderstanding that a clutch pac doesn't include a pilot bearing for the flywheel, throwout bearing, pressure plate, and clutch disk. I didn't like Napas site, it didn't have any info on it and left me in the dark as to what exactly was included for the $100 in the "clutch pac". Can't be all 5 things I listed above are included for $100???. However I believe the ones advance auto is offering are totally brand new and not rebuilt ones and I'm still wondering about that "damp organic" stuff. Well, time to get off this thing and make a couple calls, I want to get one ordered tonight and make sure I have one for next week.
Thanks

I have had very good luck with anything That came from NAPA. What you need to do is shut down your computer and drive on down to your local NAPA store. Tell the experts there what you need, and they will fix you right up.
