Saw a differant Implement

Since we had a few days with out rain I saw the sugar cane farmers in the fields this week. They were cleaning and building ditches for water/rain removal.

They were using 2 things I have seen many times. One is a backhoe on wheels. Looks like a track hoe but has a high center thing on wheels to go down crop rows. The other is a pto driven dirt thrower. You drive across the rows and this thing cuts a ditch (about 8 to 12 in wide) but throws the dirt in the air so it distributes the dirt over the field and not next to the ditch.
I have seen both of these many times but this one farmer had a ditch cleaner I have never seen before. It looked like a very large middle buster. Do not know if it was store bought or farm made as I was going by at 50 mph and could only see the results and not the implement. But anyway the tractor was straddling a large ditch and this thing was cutting/cleaning a ditch about 3ft deep and about 4ft wide.

Just wondering if any one has seen such a implement before.

As a side note..... Get ready Spring is on the way. The gulf water 50 miles off the coast is already 70 deg and I noticed the blackberries bushes around here are in full bloom already.

Hi John, we call it a V-digger. When I was in LA I worked with my uncle on his sugar cane farm for many years. He had one hat I used to use. They work great, we made our cross ditches about 3' deep and around 5' wide. If needed, we could still cross these ditches with the tractors, most are Hi crops so there was plenty of clearance. They can not be pulled fast since you are straddling the ditch. But with the front wheel assist tractors I found it a lot easier to operate. I wish I was still down there, the gulf is just about ready for specs and reds, and I miss my fishing...

We use an implement like that to make dredge cuts across fields to drain standing water. If done right, they will cut a trench approximately 1 ft deep, and feathered on the edges so that they can be crossed by tractors, planters, sprayers, combines etc. without jarring ones eye teeth loose. Another advantage to this type of ditcher is that it can be operated at around 12 mph. This is a God send on rented ground where the owner is not going to invest in tiled drainage.

YES that looks like the thing I saw.
Like I said I was going by on the highway so I can not be sure but that things looks like it would do what I saw.

Saw a rig like that at the Farm Mech Show in Moncton, NB. yesterday. It cuts a nice uniform trench and spreads the dirt out to the sides. I remember seeing a similar machine at the Ottawa show many years ago. I think that one was made in Italy.
