I have a Zenith carb that was leaking so I bought a rebuild kit and took it apart. It seemed pretty clean inside but I replaced all the parts and cleaned everything up and put it back together. It still leaks. I put it in a glass jar like the picture in stuck and troubled and it leaks past the needle valve. About a drip every 6 seconds. I have adjusted the float six ways from sunday and it won"t stop that last little drip. What is my problem?? What else can I try??It is a new valve and guide. Even tried the old valve as well. I would like to get this perfect if possible. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Here's the problems as I see 'em possible.

You've said you've adjusted the float height, so I'm gonna say adjusting it won't fix yer problem.

Try this. Grab the end of the needle with a small pair of needle nosed pliars and give er a twist in. For some reason, this has seemed to help some on occasion.

Next, check to make sure your float is still good. One little pin hole, or a collapsed float will not be enough to float, thus won't push the needle up. This can be hard to tell. Put some fuel in a jar and see if it floats REAL good, or wants to sink after a bit or float lower. Maby compare to a known good one if you have it.

Next, check float clearance. I used lip stick on the float.....turn carb up side down, and put the bowl on. Turn over, shake up and down a couple times, and back upside down to take the bowl off. See if you have contact. (color optional on the lip stick) :)

I'd also suggest a paper filter if the tank isn't REAL clean. Also, take apart the fuel line, petcock, elbows, etc and make sure no rust flakes are hung up anywhere.

Good luck!

It is possible that the float is worn away where it touches the needle. Bend the float up a little. You are answering your own question. Since you can get it to shut off by pushing it,
it is not the needle and seat.

Contaminant in the gas in the form of VERY small rust particles will prevent the needle from fully seating. You may want to try additional in-line pleated paper gas filter. Otherwise you may have to resort to turning off the gas valve when not using or find a suitable viton tipped needle to use in place of the metal one. This will allow some compliance and effect a seal between the needle tip and seat. I had to do this on an old motorcycle in order to get it to stop leaking. Ended up finding a viton tipped needle which fit the same diameter but was to long then grinding the overall length to match the original solid steel needle.

Vern, you should always turn the gas off on a bike or tractor gas washing of cylinders removes oil and wears them faster. You can tell the guys that dont shut the gas off when you look at some cylinders.

both the old needle and the new needle had a viton tip I believe. both the tips were rubber. I assume that is the viton??? wouldn't a small particle just stop the needle from seating once and then be carried away once the flow resumed again and not stick there every time? thanks

I have had mystery flooding problems with viton tip needles that defied fixing untill I learned to rub the needle tip across rough cloth like a denim pants leg. You need to do fairly hard strokes at all angles to allow the rough cloth to rub imbedded bits of rust or metal from the soft needle surface. Install a paper fuel filter as close to the carb as possible. One that works well in a lot of installations,is the filter used on 60's Ford cars and pickups. This filter has a 5/16 hose barb on the inlet, and a 1/8 male pipe thread on the outlet that in many cases will screw directly into the carb.

Does the needle valve have a seat inside the carb that may need replaced? A hardened seat in Tecumseh carbs does the same thing! I'm not sure if yours has one, just something to look for. RJ

yes, I put a new seat in with a new washer/gasket as well. If I push the float up slightly with a screwdriver it will stop the little drip but the float doesn't seem to put enough pressure on the valve on it's own.

Did you install the needle valve seat the correct way? Some seats are a one way installation. If you get it in upside down, it may leak. Another trick to try is to bend the tang on the float so it puts more pressure on the seat! (This will make the float sit at an angle, more than usual.) But, don't give it too much of an angle. Try it. you may have other troubles, like a casting hole. by: RJ
