If you have a working thermostat, does closing the radiator shutters or covering the radiator help warm the engine to the temperature that the thermostat begins to open? I thought covering the radiator didn't help until the thermostat was open and coolant was circulating thru the radiator. Not that important I guess but I was just wondering.

It will help a bit. Like a draught caused by that fan, at say -30, will slow the rate of warming. Just a case of every little bit helps when the temps are really low, but in warm weather..... .
I cover my rads whenever possible to help the manifolds heat up so I can change from gas to kero as soon as possible.
