This is bad. This is a little more than bad.

I'm really gettin' the urge to buy another old tractor. I don't need it, I sure don't have room for it, I can't afford it and I 'just about' don't want the darned thing.

But, doggone! Those old IH 656Ds tug on me!

How does a guy get outta this "Old Tractor" habit, anyway? There's gotta be a cure for this madness!

Allan

Sounds to me like a Sickness, like being horse crazy, or dog crazy, or what ever sickness a person gets, you "think" you have to have it, but can't seem to get over what you think you have to have, I'd have to say, you need to see a Psychiatrist to get over your problem, that money you spend with him/her will do you a lot better then buying something you don't need...Good Luck!

I heard that dyin' tends to make a feller buy fewer of 'em, but don't know as how it can totally cure it. Prolly not worth it anyway, I'd say just buy the danged thing. You know deep down inside you want it. You want it bad...

Allen;
I think a couple of the guys have got it figured out but let me spell it out for you.

There is no cure for what you have so do this.

Hand the wife the check book and tell her if I can find enough money this afternoon I am going to buy this tractor.
While she may not cure your wanting a tractor she will have enough horses and tack by this afternoon you will not be able to get the tractor.

Wish I could, I need the cure too. Last year I finally got things just the way I wanted them, 3 good tractors, all 7 series Fords, all in good shape. Then I up and mess up the nest, get another Case (defended in that it WAS a skid loader and I liked them so much better than NH). Then just went over the top, never cared much IH stuff (blasphemy I know) but low and behold a cute little 460D followed me home. Then had need of 560D so it wouldnt get lonely, guy had 2 of them and wouldn't want to leave that other one all by itself. Then Saturday a former student came by and wants me to look at a couple of old dozers he has. At this rate I may wind up with as much old iron as China. When you find the cure please, please let me in on it.

You guys are scaring me! Does it ever get any better? I must have got infected from this website through the phone line. I bought a IH-766 last summer to farm 7 acres. Then I bought a 656 in Nov as a backup or in case I ever get stuck. So far this year I bought a Super A, Super C, an M, and a 450 and I'm currently trying to buy an H. My wifes a saint!

Allan,
If you need a reality check, go look at the prices of old cars. (muscle cars, hot rods, etc).

After 20 years of that, I am discovering how many tractors you can have for the price of one nice drag car. Plus, I get a ton more use from my tractors than the cars. Two more to sell and I am out. What I paid for insurance alone, I could have another nice tractor.

Well, let's see. Compared to Belgians,(or enny other horse) A 656: 1. Don't need feedin' or waterin' evry day. 2. Don't need shoein' but once evry cupla years. 3. Don't kick 4. Don't bite 5. Don't need shots 6. Don't need to fly 'em 7. Don't need an hour to harness up 8. Don't need wormin' 9. Don't get cut 10.Don't need much atenshun 11.Don't eat the little womans flowers 12.Don't girth enny trees 13.Don't need a speshal hat 14.Don't need a speshal seat 15.Don't need speshal soap 16.Don't need hair condishuner 17.Don't need primpin' before and after use 18.Don't chew the fencin' 19.Don't talk back 20.Don't chew paint offa car or truck hood 21.Don't walk in yer house 22.Don't take yer hat 23.Don't stand on yer foot 24.Don't run off at night 25.Don't drink yer beer
Those are about the only reasons I can think of for not gettin' another tractor, I hope it helps.

What would you say about posting up some pictures of a certain 966 with cab that was to make the 48 mile journey to your house? :>)

Aint had time to make the trip yet. I'm hoping a fellow splits up a loader and I can use it on the farm before I bring it this way. The one that has me cranked right now is wondering how to buy that old Case. Hopefully I'll get to the farm this weekend (I get Suday morning off)and get some shots of the 966. I can't believe I don't have a pic in my scrapbook here. I spent a lot of time on her!

Bill,

Is that Case the same EXACT tractor? If so, I can see why you are agonizing over it so.

If I could ever find one of my old tractors again, I'd break my cardnal rule and mortgage every darned thing I own to get it back.

Good Luck on the chase,

Allan

It is "THE" one Allen. Sigh. This is me last time I ran it in 1982. I first pulled the tooter when I was three years old, in the early 60s. It went to AR and then I lost it. It surfaced in GA. THis old girl lead me down the path of iron deficiant behavior. I've owned a lot of old tractors but always not the right one because they have been compared to this one. Timing really creats a vacuum! I will at least keep track of it. It will be available again one day.

It's simple to figure out here at my place more horses more tractors more hay to put up need more tractors to cut, rake ,bale, haul in,run the elavator don't like to pull pins. The ratio right now is 8 horses to 20 tractors. My odds are still working for me yet!

Tell your accountant (and the IRS) the truth; that this is a hobby and not a business. The tax bite should inject a little sanity into your longings..... .....(Maybe it is a business and I'm off base..... .no insult intended)

Nope, no cure. It just keeps getting worse and worse, and worse. It's quite annoying when all you can find in your pockets are a few cents. I know the feeling well! Being a 15 year old farmhand doesn't bring in a lot of money. :-(

Hey, wait a minute! I know of a possible cure. Look in the "Stuck and Troubled" gallery. I'm going to post my next tractor project (I won't get to it for a few years, though!). At least you generally don't have to spend thousands putting horses back together again. ;-)

'Fraid I can't find 25 cents to put in your jar for saying "the word", though.

Cheer up, and try to resist the urge. It might go away after a while.

Allan, with a wife getting into the horse business, your tractor problem will magically take care of itself. Between building barns, fixing fence, hauling manure and all the other little myriad chores, you will have neither the time, money or energy to expand your tractor hobby. Believe me, "been there, doing that".

They may not be your salvation, but they will definitely become your albatross. But as a wise man once said, "There are a lot of worse things to have in this world than a happy wife." Come to think of it, I may have said that in an earlier post. Well, whatever.

Mud,

By golly, I think you're right!

My wife keeps telling me that I can't "Save 'em all". She's got a point.

Don't really have one in mind, but I've been droolin' all morning over this Iowa 656 that went on the block this morning in the photo ads. Trouble is, this one is a gasser.

But, you talk about a dog-goned teaser too! :>(

Allan...for your own mental health in years to come I would advise you to take one thing at a time....get yer 966 home and play with it for awhile and then see if you still have a hankerin for a 656. I think when you get the three girls lined up out in the yard you might decide that you don't really need a fourth.

Now when you get back out to the farm and have more room....that may be a different proposition.

Good luck buddy!
