Hello to everyone. Its been a long time but now I'm in a bind. I have a 494A planter and I lack four pesticide/herbicide boxers for it. My questions are: Are the pesticide/herbecide boxes the same except for what they connect to? I would think that they are the same and that I can cross them. The owners manual doesnt say anything about them being the same boxes on the back and my local dealer is like talking to a box of rocks. Second, would the same type of boxes off of a 1240 JD fit? They look the same in all the pictures that I have seen. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time and keep up the good posts. Caleb in TX
PS: When one of you finds that money tree out there please let me know!

The boxes are the same, just set up different for pesticide, front of wheel to drop in furrow and herbiside that mounts on the back side of the wheel and drives from the oposite side, the axle in the press wheel has to be live, if it is a plain 494 the axle is not live and uses drive gears that bolt to the press wheel with a jackshaft. the pesticide(insecticide) for the 494 is different but the newer units can be modified to fit. the 494 and early 494A had small boxes for both with the later 494A having a larger box and those are the same as all the 1200 series planters.

reading some more, the mounts for the boxes on 494A or 1200 series hold both boxes and I would have to go out to the barn in the snowstorm, got stuck in my drive coming home from work, to check for sure but I don't think there is any difference between left and right, just put the oposite end to the front on right than left, the hardware just has to be in the corect place

We have a 494A sitting in the weeds... I think it has all the boxes on it still if you are interested I could take a look when the snow quits blowing enough to see it.

I'll guess the rear boxes are much smaller & different than the front fertilizer boxes.

Yes they are but I am sure it has all the boxes on it still. I'll check tomorrow if it isn't snowing and blowing too much.
