I have a 1965 Ford F350, flat bed with dump. The is a 240 cubic inch inline 6 with a 1 barrell carb. The air cleaner currently installed is a mesh type with an oil reservoir. I want to install a paper type filter, but have been unable to determine what type to buy and whether or not the new filter will go into the existing air cleaner pan. Anybody know if a paper type filter can replace a mesh type, and if so, do I need a new air cleaner pan?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It's a matter of preference, as to whether to convert from the oil bath breather, but if I'm not mistaken, the purpose was to use non-detergent oil which allows the contaminants to settle down to the bottom, as opposed to being suspended within the oil, even then on a breather it probably makes no difference ( or does it ? ) as to what type of oil you use. I know on older small engines, where the crankcase oil is a splash lube type, without a pressurized oil system, non detergent would seem to be the logical choice as the contaminants settle out to the bottom of the sump or pan, and not get suspended within the oil to be filtered out, as in a pressurized system with a filter.

Why would you want to change it over ? It must work good as it is allready 40 years old and still going. Paper filters are getting expensive you can still find some cheap oil about $1.00 qt.should be cheaper to change ?

Thanks for the help. This gives me another reason to "tour" the boneyards in my area.
