Hi Guys, Just wondering if any of You have a good way of freeing rear wheels off a tractor. Mine have not been off for who knows how long and the wheels are rusted to the axle hubs. Have been using penetrant and light use of 3lb maul but no success! It is a '61 140 so it has the cast wheel on the right side and I don't want to risk damaging it. No room to get behind it and pry! Also tires full liquid! Think maybe that's why rims so rusty and wheels are in good shape, 'fraid I'll have to change rims! Gettin' near the end of resto! Cleaning and painting diff axles and wheels last part! Hate to think these wheels gonna whip Me! You guys here always have good useful advice! Thanx! Scott

like tractor vet says. Your 3# hammer is way too small. If you are going to hit it HIT IT.

True. A small hamer breaks things a big one moves things.

I have used a bottle jack on the axle with a chain to the wheels around the jack.

Takes a little monkeying to get things right but when you do doesn't take much force. Think the largest jack I used was a 5 ton. Make sure the pump is at the bottom.

Are you using the tractor now? Here is what worked for me...I could get the bolts loose....so with the bolts loose ,leave them in the tractor wind a loop of wire around each one so you cant lose them....as you drive the tractor - working and jerking they came loose....didn't cost anything and got rid of a few loads of cow manure..... watch the wheel carefuly!!!!!

That post brings back a lot memories. Last year I had to remove both wheels on one side of my JD 5020. I used a lot of rust buster stuff and some heat. I sand blasted around the hub to get it real clean so the penatrating oil will soak in better. I jacked up the opposite side wheels and rigged a swining weight and proceded to pound on the axle with the tires on the ground. I made a axle protector tube. and eventully they came loose. Just don't get in a hurry. Stan

I just had a Farmall 140 come to my shop for a brake job. The wheels on either side would not come off. You mentioned you do not have room for a pry bar. I used a 6ft. rock bar to force both sides off. They were also filled and were stuck on real tight.

My best lucky way is to loosen bolts drive wedge out with hammer and bar and to have axle key way on bottom and keep spinning and hitting bottom of wheel.

I havn't had that happen for quite a while, but in the past if you have the nuts off I would put them back on, but leave them loose enough to let the wheel come loose, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch play. Then drive the tractor around in tight circles paying attention to when they start to loosen up. With the tractor going in circles it puts a lot of side pressure on the wheels and usually will work loose. Also would soak good for a couple days ahead of time with "Blaster" or some other good penetrating oil. Good Luck!

Shock (hammer) and penetrating oil. Jeep going.

Some loosen the bolts a bit - not real loose - & drive it. Just be careful doing this, think what you are doing, it can really pop when it loosens, and you want to be real near where you want to be when it does loosen.

Can you get a 4 x 4 from one wheel to the other with a hyd. jack on one end. Maybe find a spot on the chasis and jack with a block against the wheel as close to center as possible.
