Started to get into my late Grandfather's Avery V. Every thing has looked good. No stuck bolts. Next to no rust. (12 different colors of paint and 1/2" of hardened oil soaked dirt everywhere!) NO sign of a ridge, pitting scouring or other bad things on the cylinder bore! Rods are tight. Valve sealing face is not pitted/burned and not worn enough to see light between a razor on the face. But the stems are worn 1/2-2 thou and irregular wear The guides are 8thou over in the middle!!! THis has a Hercules ZXB-3 Guides are replaceable 1/4" nominal ID. I don't want to take the engine out ofthe frame if I can help it. I have access to valve grinders and seat grinders. I have a lathe (made a new shaft for the govener the day before). 1. Why were the guides so bad and everything else looking ok? 2. Where can I get a set of new valves and guides? Guess on $ 3. I think I now a guy with a centerless grinder that could recondition the valve stems and then I could machine up new guides (bronze or Iron?)with undersize bores to press in and then ream to size. What do you guys think?

i got some guides from napa once for that engine.if not available you could call goodson.com and see whats available to recondition the inside of the guide. if you grind the valve stems then your keepers and valve spring retainers wont fit. another thing to consider is ex valve seats. if your going to work it at all you will need hardened exvalve seats installed.

I will only comment on what I know about bronze vs iron guides.Bronze is for a race motor but does it make it faster; not at all.Does it wear faster;yes. Also guide Id and od has to be real concentric to each other to get a good valve job. When its not youll remove way more seat material than ncessary cutting[grinding] the new seat resulting in sunken vavles.Manley makes ones I cant use.Rowe and Kibblewhite make concentric ones.I have a lathe and reasonable machining skills but would not attempt to make valve guides myself.[They wear out from the side thrusting effect of the rocker arm action plus the linear movement.]good luck

Of coarse a tractor may be more tolerant of valves sunk a little and it could be fun to try and make your own guides. Its just that the more you grind the closer youll get to seat replacement.Oh well, you wont know unless you try it.[forget that rocker arm comment since you have none]

They sould be ok as they are--But--if you really want to work on them (and then it WILL require a valve-job).. NAPA sells kits for knurling the guides..(easy).. OR..they also sell kits for boreing the guides, to install bronze inserts... With the boreing, you get a LOT of metal dropping all over, and it would be best to do it during an out of frame session... Knurling is easy and produces fewer metal chips.. I would check to see if I could then use "Ford-type Umberella (cup type) valve seals" on the intake valves...

Ron..

Hey Bushog Papa,I dont know if anybody realizes what you meant so Ill reiterate a little: once you bang out the old guides you must reseat the vavles. You cant replace guides without a vavle job following.Otherwise leave them alone.

On the valves and valve guides. Do you have dimensions for the stems in thousands? Do you have either an I & T or Hercules manual? I do not think you are going to find a knurler for 1/4 inch guides to be real common. I will need to look at what the O. D. of the guides is. How good are the intake valves. Also remember you can run an L-head engine with more stem to guide clearance than an overhead valve engine. Questions? I may have answers. You can also post his on:wwww.hartparroliver.org or send ma phone number.

Called a guy that is sopposed to have it all for the Herc. He has exaust valves $8 ea. But nothing for the guides and the company that made them won"t anymore. Intake valves are in the hands of a guy in Washington state and he wants $30 ea. I have I&T but it is in the shop and I cant rember the exact #"s. Keeper is a 1/8 pin weak but not otherwise impacted by grinding. Exaust valves are worn out on one side only top and bottom oppisite sides so I might end up with more than 6 thou off if I have them ground. Seats and faces look good is the supprizing part. NO GO on knurrling I"ve done that junk before and learned my lesson. Works good and then worse than before in a hurry. Goodson has on line cataloge and nothing under .3xx ID I might call and see if they don"t have something "out back". I have yet to talk to West Falls Machine They keep a pile of guys busy redoing engines for A"s and T"s and anything else that comes in the door. Thank you to the folks that replied and I will contact you via E-mail. Vincent
