Well it was a nice trip out and back, first tractor hauled with my newer Dodge 3/4 ton. The Ferguson TO 30 ended up being a 1954 and did have the Howard installed. Mark H.

I'm not familiar with Fergusons. What's a Howard? Thanks for the education!

Well I'm not Wiily-N but I think I can answer your questions.
A Ferguson is the Forunner of the Massey Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson invented the three point hitch system and had a Partnership with Henry Ford to use it on the Ford tractors. The deal fell through and the two split and Ford kept using Fergusons design without a patent for years. Furguson started building his own tractor using his three piont system. The lawsuit was kept in the courts untill the patent ran out and most manufacturers went to some variation of Furgesons system.
The Howard transmission was an aftermarket transmission built by the same company that makes the Howard Rotovater. Both the Fords and the Furgesons had a low gear ground speed that was to fast for the Rotovator and the howard was a spped reduction transmissiom that would reduce the ground speed but not the PTO speed as all other aftermarket transmissions did. The Howard was said to be fragile and broke easily and it did if used improperly. Folks used it as a granny gear and attempted to pull with it which caused all kinds of expensive noises. Because of that a good Howard transmision is hard to find. Used for its designed purpose as a speed reducer the Howard was capable device.

Your right about the miss use of them! I have been lucky to find 3 good ones so far as the gearing was not intended for pulling stumps. It slows the ground speed down to a 3 to 1 ratio and that allows a lot of torque on the transmission. So over the years people have busted them using them by improper use. Not many left anymore that are still good. Mark H.
