Cub tractor problem

I have a late 1940's Farmall cub. I was trying to start with compression pull by truck. When I popped the clutch out, I heard a big "pop." As a result the wheels locked, and the tractor is immovable. Where do I start to look for the problem.

I'm sure the engine turns over. I jacked up both rear wheels, while turning one wheel forward the other back wheel turns backward with a growling noise coming from the right side. Should I take off the right wheel, and if so what do I look for?

What you describe is normal for any vehicle equipped with a differential...if you turn one wheel with the transmission locked up, the other wheel will turn in the opposite direction because of the gears in the differential. The noise that you describe is probably not a symptom of the larger problem you have yet to diagnose, at least in my humble opinion. The other posts give good starting points to look.

were you pulling it because the engine was stuck? If it will roll with the clutch in the engine is locked as ahs been mentioned, which could come from a stuck piston, stuck valve, or fluid such as water in a piston. If it won"t roll with the clutch down, try rolling it backwards. If it will move just a little you may have a tooth broken off a gear. If you were shifting gears when it happened, you may be in 2 gears at once.
