Wanted to thank you guys for postings that I looked at that helped me from being SCAMMED. I was made an offer on a tractor I listed on the N Complete Classifieds and was told a check would arrive with 3400.00 extra for shipping, which I was asked to Western Union to the buyers shipping company, overseas. The check would have been counterfeit. You know the rest of the story. I checked the archives for similar SCAMS and sure enough, found some warnings of the same SCAM. Anyway, thanks and I hope someone reads this before they get taken.

Tom: With the exception of Bob, who by the way ignors them, I'd be willing to bet everyone else responding to this thread, you included, get scammed by someone less than 10 miles from home at least once per month. Granted a lot of it may be nickle and dime stuff, but it is happening.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO, IS WHEN THEY ASK YOU FOR YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION, ASK THEM TO SEND THEIR'S "FIRST" THEN SEND IT TO THE FED'S ALWAYS SEND SCAM IMEMS TO THE PROPER AUTHORITIES, THEY NEED TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON.

The one I'm getting the last week or two is from some bank I never heard of saying--- "there has been some unusually activity on your account, please respond to " XXXXX XX" ". If i hold my mouse over the address (don't click it) I find it is like 211.23.176.99 which is "asia pacific network infomation center". What is it they want? my address?

There's another good one here. In the classifieds
someone had a good deal listed for a Kubota backhoe loader,I asked for pictures they emailed me pictures stolen right off of an old ebay ad. I played along with the game said I'd take it send me address and I'll bring cash and pick it up. They gave some good story about moving and would ship it to me for inspection if I sent a $2000 deposit with some square trade outfit. I sure wish there was a way to bust these cheets as they ruin it for the good guys.

There is a way to "bust" them. Ignore them. When people wise up a bit and learn to ignore them and stop falling for their silly tricks, they'll quit!

The sad part is, so many of these scams play on the GREED of the "scamee", who's hoping to get something for nothing!

Tom,

Another one to watch out for is an email from Ebay or PayPal "concerning your accout".

They are frauds trying to glean user IDs and passwords and are totally bogus.

Just FWIW,

Allan

I read a short time ago that 3% of people fall for these type scams and send information they ask for. I had one from someone who happened to get my bank name correct. I live in a small town and called the bank to see if they used email for information. They said NEVER. Also never give your SS number to anyone that ask for it by email.

I never give my SS# to anyone anymore, if a form asks for it I just draw a line thru it. If an establishment needs it they can explain to me why they have to have it and then I will decide if I need their services.

The video store, vet, etc, damn sure don"t need it.

I had it taken off my drivers license, my health insurance card doesn"t have it on it anymore either, thankfully.

I also don"t carry my social security card anyore at all.

If they get a 3% response, don't look for the scams to dry up anytime soon. That's a better response rate than direct mail, and at less cost to them- and with a substantially higher reward from the scammees. I've been getting the "Bank information update" emails at the rate of about one a day- the only positive is that they don't carry viruses! They use phrases like "it is obligatory that you respond" and "we earnestly request. . ."- usages that natural English speakers would never use, at least in a business context.

Hey Allen, I just got one today about a thjird party accessing my account. It seems they needed my SS# user name and password, info which I thought my bank had. They even left a contact link so I wouldn't need to think for myself. Trouble is that I don't have an account with that bank.
