FEL hay spear mounting

Just bought a round bale hay spear designed to fasten onto the lower part of the FEL bucket. (The FEL is a Memo model 500.) It would seem logical that you would want to locate the spear dead center of the bucket however; the bucket has a rib in the center, which prevents mounting the spear in the center. It will fit fine on either side of the rib but will be of center approximately 6-8". Just wondering how some of you folks may have handled the situation or if anyone has advice to offer. Thanks for your help.

JB, that kind of spear is better than nothing, but not anywhere as good a a quick-tach spear where you take the bucket off the FEL. The add-on kind like you are talking about puts the load about 18 inches farther forward, greatly reducing the power of the FEL and the stress on the FEL. For an occasional bale mover may work, but be careful.

I agree with Tom; 'druther have spear mounted directly to loader. I bought one from local CO-OP a few years ago which was made for three-point hitch.....simple matter to fabricate a mount so it attaches where bucket did. Seldom use it because I like (home-made) forks better. Don't know how your spear is made, so this may not be an option for you.

You definately want that spear mounted in the center of the bucket. Mounting it to either side will result in the load being off center and could damage the loader. The load being off center will also make the entire tractor less stable, could spell disaster. You will need to find some steel and bolt to the bucket so that the spear will clear the center rib. Maybe a couple lengths of hollow rectangular tubing?

Not sure I understand your concept RustyFarmall, but I can be a bit slow. Was thinking that I may need to have my welder friend cut the existing mounting bracket of and move to one side and fabricate another identical one for mounting on the other side. This would allow centering with the rib in the middle and also give a more ridged mount than the existing design.

It's hard to explain and I am no good at drawing pictures but I think we are on the same track. I was thinking of mounting the rectangle tubes to the bucket, one on either side of the center rib. That way the spear can be mounted on top of these pieces, and will be above the center rib.

That type of spear can be hard on the bucket, I know I had to replace the bottom of my bucket this winter because I broke the bottom out of it.

I considered that possibility and may weld a support bracket to the spear that can be attached to the top of the bucket to provide additional support. Thanks.
